Characters

Jake

Angela

[Lights up.  The stage is an empty space.  The sound of whispering wind plays, then a few seconds later the sound of a flying airplane fades in.  Jake and Angela are heard offstage, shouting their lines.]

Jake  Ok, are you ready?

Angela  I don’t know about this!

Jake  Oh, come on, it will be fun!

Angela  I think I want to go back inside…

Jake  Too late, here we go…

Angela  Noooo

The sound of the airplane fades out, then Jake and Angela are lowered down from above the stage, wearing harnesses and hanging from a rope attached to their backs.  Off to the side of each stage is a fan tilted up towards the hanging actors, blowing wind through them.

Angela  [screaming]

Jake  Woooooo…heck yeah, baby.

Angela  This isn’t happening, this isn’t happening!

Jake  Go on, spread your wings and fly!

Angela  We’re falling, not flying!

Jake  Don’t worry, we be eagles!

Angela  Please…let this be over soon…!

Jake  Don’t let it stop!

Angela  I can’t believe I’m doing this…

Jake  Believe it, missy!

Angela  I’m dreaming, I must be dreaming!

Jake  This is so awesome!

Angela  Please wake up…please wake up…

Jake  Ok, now pull!  Pull!

Jake and Angela pull a cord attached to their backpacks.  Inside their backpacks is a coiled-up blanket passing off as a ‘parachute.’  After pulling, the string attached to the blanket inside the backpack pulls up, deploying the ‘parachute.’  The blankets are pulled up to the ceiling out of audience view, and they hang from the parachute ropes.  The two fans off to the side of the stage are turned off.  No longer falling at terminal velocity, their movement is less frantic.

Jake  Woooooooeeeeeeee……

Angela  [clinging to her harness for dear life] Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh…

Jake  Isn’t that the most awesome thing you’ve ever done?

Angela  No!  It is not awesome, it is insane!

Jake  C’mon, live a little!

Angela  This is not my idea of living!

Jake  This sure beats going on a roller coaster.

Angela  How could I ever let you talk me into this?

Jake  Oh, you’re fine…now you can brag to all you friends that you actually did this.

Angela  I don’t know if it was worth it…

Jake  You’re still alive, aren’t ya?

Angela  Yeah, and I want it to stay that way!

Jake  Now we can just relax as we drift back to earth.

Angela  Relax?  How can you relax?  We jumped out of an airplane!

Jake  I know it, too cool!

Angela  Oh…will this ever come to and end?!

Jake  Look, we’re almost there!

Angela  No, I can’t look!

Jake  Aww…now it’s over.

The lights illuminate the background of the stage, where there are large sheets of paper with drawings of trees and grass taped to the wall, representing that they have reached ground.  Jake and Angela are lowered down to the floor of the stage, they reach behind, detach the rope from their backs, the ropes are lowered up out of sight, and the two are left on the floor, and the ‘parachute’ blankets fall on top of them.

Jake and Angela lay on the ground, high on an adrenaline rush.

Jake [laughing]  Hahaha….oh, man…that was too good.

Angela  [curling herself up in a ball, eyes shut] Is it over?  Is it over?  Please tell me.

Jake  Open your eyes, baby!  It’s done!

Angela  Oh, thank you, thank you!  I love you ground, I love you so much…I’ll never leave you again.

Jake  Next time, we gotta bring snowboards—sky-surfing!  Heck yeah!

Angela  A next time?”  No way!

Jake  Oh come on, you’re no fun…

Lights fade.
