WHO IS OMTA? OMTA administration is made of members (a representative and alternate for each of the major groups represented) two or more at-large representatives, and a President. OMTA Board members serve a term of two years commencing each April 1. Each group represented makes nominations for their representative. OMTA holds a minimum of three general and special meetings per year for all members - in November, April and August. OMTA is a non-profit corporation with all members, officers and Directors serving without payment. No part of the assests of the Association is used for the benefit of, or to be distributed to, any member, member club, or any type of member organization. OMTA subscribes to the TREAD Lightly! principles on environmental ethics for the development of multi-use trails. WHY DO WE NEED OMTA? Faced with the rapidly growing population of Ohio, and the increasingly limited places to legally enjoy Ohio's beautiful outdoor recreational opportunities, trail users from all over Ohio have teamed up to form OMTA. OMTA is proposing an approach designed to create a net environmental gain on Ohio's abandoned mine sites, state and national forests, abandoned township and railway corridors, and other trail opportunities - to provide safe and environmentally sustainable recreation opportunities. OMTA participants range from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Ohio Horseman Council, the Wild Turkey Federation, NRA volunteers, 4-H, and the motorized off-highway community. OMTA provides an open forum for all to discuss the hurdles faced today in outdoor recreation. OMTA is led by nationally recognized experts in both the environmental and recreation-planning fields. They regularly discuss the re-vegetation of abused lands, design aspects of trail systems, user conflict resolution, efforts in other states, user ethics, and the environmental and economic implications of the OMTA concept. Access to public held land, and the recreational opportunities they provide, proved to be the most popular topics at public meetings held across the state to seek comment on the future of Ohio's natural resources, and the varied recreation these lands provide. OMTA wants to chart a course for Ohio's public lands so that future generations know how to best ensure protection of the resource and provide for recreation and other uses of the land. As we enter a new century, it is apparent more and more that Ohio residents and out-of-state visitors are looking to our vast state woodlands to provide more avenues for recreation. For the first time, in a bid for greater statewide participation, OMTA is inviting all recreationists to the tble to interact, speak out, compromise, and listen to users who once did not want to hear what the other sides had to say. OMTA meetings are the latest effort to gain public feedback and help shape the revision of Ohio Resource Management, Forest-management philosophies, policies, and goals proposed in Ohio's districts. OMTA members opinions are diverse and wide ranging, but members are united in educating its members on public information/perception and education efforts; solid law enforcement; sustainable forestry; science-based ecosystem management; water quality; volunteerism; and land acquisition. TREAD Lightly! All outdoor enthusiasts need to learn how to use our resources responsibly by employing low impact principles in their chosen activity. We can protect our future outdoor opportunities by learning to minimize our environmental impact today. ------------------------------------------------------------ OMTA 'Individual' members are any reliable person eighteen years of age or older who is interested in developing and maintaining a wide variety of recreational trails.
