Request for the calling of an emergency addition to the agenda of the sixty-first session

Need to examine the exceptional international crisis, and to question the effectiveness and future existence of the United Nations Organisation, to ensure the security and safety of the global population in this time of protracted conflict

Letter dated March 15, 2006 from the representatives of Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

Upon the instructions of our respective Governments, we hereby request, pursuant to rule 14 of the rules and procedures of the General Assembly, the inclusion in the agenda of the sixty-first session of the Assembly of an emergency supplementary item "Need to examine the exceptional international crisis, and to question the effectiveness and future existence of the United Nations Organisation, to ensure the security and safety of the global population in this time of protracted conflict". Pursuant to rule 20 of the rules and procedures of the General Assembly, we attach an explanatory memorandum (see annex I) and a draft resolution (see annex II).
