TEASER

FADE IN:

EXT. ARCHANGEL DOCK

Taking a heavy pounding from the seaFire’s weapons. The Archangel herself is protected by her defence field, as Lysanders pour from the complex, streaking towards the seaFire.

EXT. EXCALIBUR

Establishing, adrift.

INT. WARDROOM

The senior staff enters. The atmosphere is extremely tense. Warren goes to stand at the head of the table, as the others take their seats.

WARREN

Alright, here are the basics.

(beat)

The virus that hit us has shut down all systems on the boat, with the exception of life-support.

SMITH

(sarcastically)

How nice of Section 7.

Warren looks at him, and continues.

WARREN

All critical command pathways have been affected. Lieutenant…

He looks over at Lt. STEVENS, assistant chief engineer. Stevens looks up from the EXPOC he’s working on.

WARREN

…any progress on tracking the point of origin?

Stevens shakes his head.

STEVENS

No, sir. All the log files have been corrupted.

SMITH

It’s the same with the comms system, sir. If we got it via a communication, we can’t tell.

REYES

(leaning forward)

And the WSKRS. Our data stream could have been hacked, and we’d know nothing about it… until too late.

Warren walks around the room.

WARREN

(sighing)

Hydrosphere systems? Can we launch fighters, or a shuttle?

STEVENS

The doors are sealed tight, the launch tubes locked.

TAYLOR

Weapons too, sir. We couldn’t shoot a peashooter right now.

Warren smiles, grimly, then loses the expression.

WARREN

We still have a team over there.

He looks out of the window at the far end of the room.

WARREN

I want suggestions with me in an hour. Get them out of there.

They disperse. Warren stays, looking out of the window.

We pull back from the window (a reverse of the shot ending Part One), to the exterior of the Excalibur, to see three dark shapes moving towards her.

Off the danger…

ACT ONE

FADE IN:

EXT. EXCALIBUR

Establishing.

INT. WARREN’S QUARTERS

Warren sits at his desk, looking at his computer screen, but not actually reading the words on it. We see it’s in the form of a letter. We don’t quite see what it says, but the first line reads “Admiral Barratt,” and we realise what it means. He sits there for a while, not saying anything. Suddenly, he breaks out of his trance.

WARREN

(his voice rough)

Clear.

The screen wipes the letter clean. There is a knock on the door. Warren looks up.

WARREN

Come in.

Clark, Smith and Taylor walk in. They go to sit on the couch. Warren gets up, and goes to the chair facing them.

WARREN

How’s Tony?

CLARK

Doc says he’ll be up and about soon.

Warren nods.

WARREN

How’re we doing?

Smith shakes his head.

SMITH

Weapons and propulsion are still down. We’ve got sensors and minimal comms up. Defence systems are restricted. We have only three countermeasures available, and the A-WSKRS defence field is toast.

WARREN

Damn. And we’re heading into a massive firefight, one way or the other.

TAYLOR

I’ve been checking the schematics on the seaFire. Most of them were erased or corrupted by the virus.

Warren looks over at this, then over at Smith.

SMITH

The virus invaded our records library.

WARREN

Selective erasure?

Smith nods his head.

WARREN

How would they know the parameters?

SMITH

No idea. The ones Trish recovered were stored in different sections, under different names and even embedded in other files.

(beat, bitterly)

I knew they’d try something like this.

WARREN

Good job you’re on the ball, Dan.

(To Taylor)

Go on, Trish.

Taylor leans forward.

TAYLOR

She’s virtually impregnable, sir. None of our weapons could faze her, short of our nuclear warheads.

WARREN

(strongly)

No way. We won’t use nukes, especially in Mac territory. There are over 400 people on the ‘Fire that aren’t involved. They’re just following orders.

SMITH

So are Section 7.

Warren whirls at that.

SMITH

(matter-of-factly)

S7 could only have gotten their orders from the Sec. Gen.

WARREN

McGath may be an arrogant idealist, and he may actually believe S7 can be trusted, but even he wouldn’t authorise something like this.

CLARK

Sir…

(beat)

…there’s something else we should take note of.

He looks around the room, uncomfortably.

CLARK

Someone onboard must have planted that virus. Someone here is working for S7.

The thought knocks them cold.

WARREN

(reining in his anger)

An operative… aboard my boat…

He considers this.

WARREN

It could only have happened since the drydock. Commander…

Smith looks up.

WARREN

Get me a list of the replacement personnel we took on before the mission. Cross-reference with UEO drydock personnel who worked on the Ex. See if you can find a match, or a link.

Then send the data to me.

SMITH

Aye, sir.

WARREN

(changing the subject)

The virus can’t have stayed in our system this long without being detected and cleaned out.

CLARK

What if it was being… I don’t know… introduced into the system periodically, from a central infection point?

WARREN

(considering)

A piece of external solid-state media, connected to the mainframe?

Clark nods his head.

CLARK

Its instructions burned in, the virus reintroduced into the system every six or twelve hours or so…

SMITH

(getting into the flow)

It would have to be somewhere out of the way, somewhere low-maintenance, even in battle conditions.

Warren thinks about this for a moment… then stands up.

WARREN

I’ve got an idea.

Before he can continue, his PAL beeps, and the boat rocks.

WARREN

(into PAL)

Warren, go.

REYES

(over PAL)

Captain, three Lysanders are closing on our position.

The boat rocks again.

REYES

They’ve opened fire, pulse lasers only.

WARREN

No countermeasures for that. They know our A-WSKRS field is down.

REYES

Looks that way, sir.

WARREN

Alright, we’re on our way. Sound General Quarters.

As they head out of the door, the klaxon sounds.

CORRIDOR

The four of them leave Warren’s quarters, Warren closing and locking shut the door. As the start down the corridor at a brisk pace, Warren suddenly stops.

WARREN

I’ll be up in a second. Dan, you have the con.

He starts off in the other direction.

CLARK

(calling out)

Captain, where are you going?

WARREN

To test my theory.

He heads down the staircase at the other end of the corridor. Smith looks after him, then turns to the others.

SMITH

Come on.

They sprint in the other direction.

EXT. EXCALIBUR

The three Lysanders envelop the Excalibur in a triangular formation. They blanket the area with pulse bolts. Several strike the hull.

INT. BRIDGE

Smith, Clark and Taylor hurry onto the bridge.

SMITH

Mike, take the helm!

Clark runs to the helm console, relieving the ensign there, who goes to the Nav console.

Reyes steps down from the command console, looking questioningly at Smith.

REYES

Where’s the Captain?

Smith sits at the console.

SMITH

Taking care of business.

BILGE DECK

A far cry from the clean, uncluttered corridors above. The corridors here are filled with conduits, the walls dark and worn. In what are normally the swim tubes on the upper decks, large amounts of plants grow in the water (this is the oxy-regeneration system). Turbines and generators hum. Warren holds a palm beacon in his hand, as he sweeps the corridor.

WARREN

I really needed to think this out more.

He throws light on a large junction of conduits at the end of the corridor, and walks over, through the grease and slime. He almost slips at several points, before reaching the junction box at the centre of the mass of conduits.

WARREN

Next design, no bilge.

He sets about taking off the cover of the box.

BRIDGE

The boat rocks again. Smith turns to Clark.

SMITH

Any manoeuvring power at all, Lieutenant?

Clark shakes his head. Taylor turns from her beeping console.

TAYLOR

Incoming torpedoes, bearing 117.

SMITH

Fire one intercept. Stand-off blast, Trish.

TAYLOR

Aye, sir.

EXT. EXCALIBUR

The sub fires one sluggish intercept, which detonates dangerously close to the sub, causing the two torpedoes heading towards her to detonate.

INT. BRIDGE

A mild rock. Smith looks at a sonar display, then hits a control.

SMITH

Smith to Warren.

BILGE DECK

Warren has his hands buried deep in the junction box, the palm beacon attached to his wrist.

WARREN

(to PAL)

Open.

A beep.

WARREN

(into PAL)

Go ahead, Dan.

SMITH

(over PAL)

We’ve got problems here.

EXT. EXCALIBUR

We see a Macronesian cruiser approaching the stricken sub, dwarfing the Lysander fighters. It follows the same design as the fighters, only much larger.

INT. BRIDGE

Smith is watching the screen.

SMITH

The Macs just got some backup. One Orion-class cruiser closing to port. Weapons range in one minute.

WARREN

(over com)

On it…

BILGE DECK

Warren’s palm beacon glints across a piece of metal. Warren notices, and sweeps it back over it. It’s a small computer, about the size of a handheld games console. It’s flush against the wall, and connected to the junction box.

WARREN

(to PAL)

Open channel, bridge.

A beep.

WARREN

Warren to bridge. I’ve got it.

BRIDGE

Everyone looks relieved, although we see Reyes’ expression briefly shows what looks like anger, but before we can realise, it’s gone.

SMITH

Good work, sir. Can you get it out?

BILGE DECK

Warren works around the device, clearing wires and flexible conduits out of the way.

WARREN

Hold on. I’m going to try and flush the virus out of the system first.

He activates the device, and inputs a series of commands into it.

EXT. OCEAN

The Orion-class cruiser closes. Its weapons ports glow with energy, and its torpedo doors cycle open.

INT. BRIDGE

The crew is literally holding their breath.

TAYLOR

Weapons range in 10 seconds.

Smith hits a control.

SMITH

All hands, brace for impact. Stand by for evacuation protocols.

BILGE DECK

Warren checks around the device. Then, he tears it away from the wall, ripping its connections out with it.

BRIDGE

The screens brighten, and systems come back up. Smith whirls to Taylor.

TAYLOR

(almost shouting)

Weapons on-line!

REYES

Defence field ramping up!

CLARK

I’ve got manoeuvring!

SMITH

(grinning)

Bring us about, open fire!

EXT. EXCALIBUR

The sub comes around, lights winking back on. She fires a spread of torpedoes at the cruiser, following up with a devastating laser barrage. The cruiser shudders under the impacts, eventually torn apart by the assault. The Lysanders are quickly dispatched by close-range lasers. The Excalibur, reborn, swoops through the debris.

INT. BRIDGE

Cheers all round. Smith hits the command console.

WARREN

(O.S.)

Careful with my console, Commander.

Warren steps onto the bridge, filthy, but smiling. He holds the device in his hand. Smith relinquishes the command console to Warren. Taylor goes over.

WARREN

(to Clark)

Hold us here, Lieutenant.

CLARK

Aye, sir.

TAYLOR

(sotto, to Warren)

You need a shower.

Warren looks at her, then down at his filthy uniform, and grins.

EXT. EXCALIBUR

The Excalibur comes to rest, ready for battle.

Off the image…

FADE OUT:

END OF ACT ONE

ACT TWO

FADE IN:

EXT. EXCALIBUR

Establishing.

WARREN

(V.O.)

Captain’s log, supplemental.

We’ve purged the virus from our systems, and are making preparations to recover the team.

INT. WARREN’S QUARTERS

Cleaned up, and in a fresh uniform, Warren sits at his desk again.

WARREN

There is a renewed sense of hope amongst the crew.

(beat)

I only hope it lasts.

He looks out of the window.

WARREN

We’ve not had any further contact with the infiltration team since Dave’s frantic message, and I can’t help but think the worst.

FADE CUT TO EXT. ARCHANGEL

Surrounded by firefights.

WARREN

(V.O.)

I don’t know if we’ll get them all back.

INT. ARCHANGEL CORRIDOR

The team is once again hiding out in a deserted corridor. The corridor is bathed red by alert lights, and explosions occasionally rock the boat. We see that several of the team are injured, and Barratt is checking a gash on Scaros’ forehead.

BARRATT

It’s not deep.

SCAROS

Luckily. That rifle butt packed a punch.

Barratt nods, looking at the rest of the team. They’re exhausted. Stamp looks up from Jones (who got hit in Part Two), and goes over.

STAMP

(sotto)

Jones isn’t going to make it. She needs medical attention, now.

The boat rocks.

STAMP

Any idea what’s going on up top?

Barratt shakes his head.

BARRATT

Not a clue.

SCAROS

The Captain wouldn’t be mad enough to come in, all guns blazing, just to rescue us… would he?

Barratt looks up.

BARRATT

I don’t know.

(beat)

We can’t worry about that now. We have to get back to the Masada. If they’re powering this ship up, we’ll be cut off, and they can pick us off any time they want.

STAMP

Probably why they retreated from the firefight after sealing the access point.

BARRATT

That would be my guess too.

(beat, considering)

Any ideas?

Scaros looks around, then back at Barratt.

SCAROS

Only one, and… you’re not going to like it…

Barratt looks over at him.

EXT. seaFire

Exchanging fire with the Macronesian fighters and weapon emplacements.

INT. seaFire CARGO BAY

A large number of the seaFire crew are in here, guarded by a dozen S7 operatives, who are all armed with pulse rifles. We pan across the vast room, to see Markov, Joseph and the other bridge officers sitting around in a group, talking softly.

We cut closer to them, and hear what they are saying. The room rocks occasionally, as the sub takes hits.

JOSEPH

I’ve checked with the others. Every one of our people is under guard, whether still on duty, or in a secured location. All the cargo bays have been used, as have a dozen other rooms.

MARKOV

So any attempt we make to break out and retake the ship would mean finding and freeing them all.

Joseph nods.

JOSEPH

And if even one of the operatives is reported missing, Monroe will know what we’re doing.

The helmsman, MONAGHEN, looks around, then back at the group.

MONAGHEN

What if we sabotage the communications somehow?

JOSEPH

Bypass seven security barriers to disable the array?

MONAGHEN

(sighing)

OK, bad idea.

Markov considers.

MARKOV

So… we need a plan…

Off them, contemplating…

CUT TO INT. ARCHANGEL CORRIDOR

Barratt and Stamp are staring at Scaros.

BARRATT

That’s your plan?

Scaros nods.

SCAROS

Crazy, I know… but it’s the only chance we’ve got.

STAMP

There’s no way we can all get out that…

SCAROS

(interrupting)

No, sir. Not all of us. Just one person needs to do it.

He turns to Barratt.

SCAROS

I’d like to be that person, sir.

Barratt looks at him, carefully.

BARRATT

Are you sure about this?

Scaros nods.

SCAROS

It’ll work, sir. Trust me.

Barratt considers for a while, then finally nods.

BARRATT

(to Stamp)

Keep an eye on him until you get there.

STAMP

Aye, sir.

The two men head out down the corridor, armed with pulse rifles. Barratt watches them go, sighs, then turns back to help the others.

CUT TO EXT. EXCALIBUR

Establishing.

INT. EXCALIBUR - CORRIDOR

Crewmen are hard at work, repairing damage to a control panel. We see Warren come down the corridor, and pass them by, nodding in greeting as he does so. Warren turns into a room beyond them.

EXCALIBUR - COMPUTER CORE

About the size of the bridge, and containing what looks like a modern mainframe set-up, only double the size. A series of consoles are prominent and displays cover the walls. Dozens of crewmen are in here, some doing repairs, others simply checking readings. Smith and Reyes are already there.

SMITH

(waving him over)

Captain.

Warren goes over.

WARREN

How’re we doing?

SMITH

We’ve purged the virus from all systems. The core’s stable, no signs of degradation.

WARREN

How soon before we can get underway?

REYES

We figure maybe half an hour.

Warren nods. He then guides Smith to a corner of the room, out of earshot of everyone there. Reyes goes over to a console, checks a display with the crewman on station there.

WARREN

Any luck finding our operative?

Smith shakes his head.

SMITH

When we get back, I’ll need to interface with the UEO Central Archive.

WARREN

Selective erasure again?

SMITH

(nodding)

Exactly. Whoever did this knew we’d try that avenue of inquiry.

(beat)

They were smart, Captain. Real smart.

WARREN

I know. But, we’re back on-line now. We’ll find them, Dan.

SMITH

I hope so.

The two men walk out of the corner, and back into the room in general.

seaFire - CARGO BAY

We pan across the room again, coming to settle on a Jefferies tube access door. Joseph and Monaghen are working on it. Markov comes over.

MARKOV

How’s it going?

Joseph turns.

JOSEPH

Slow. The security bypasses are going to take a while.

MARKOV

(looking around)

Alright. You keep on that. We’re going to try a more direct approach.

Joseph looks around again, concerned.

JOSEPH

You’re sure about this, sir?

Markov nods.

MARKOV

I am.

Joseph stops, turns fully to Markov. She holds out her hand.

JOSEPH

Good luck, sir. It’s been an honour serving with you.

Markov shakes her hand.

MARKOV

And you, Commander.

He starts to walk away, to a nearby group of seaFire crewmembers.

JOSEPH

(sotto)

Be safe.

She watches after him for a moment, then turns her attention back to the door.

CUT TO EXT. EXCALIBUR

Coming about.

INT. BRIDGE

Full powered up and ready. Warren walks onto the bridge.

WARREN

All stations, report.

Quick cuts between:

SMITH

Communications… ready.

TAYLOR

Weapons ready.

CLARK

Navigation ready.

REYES

A-WSKRS and sensors… ready.

PICCOLO

(who’s back at the helm, recovered)

Helm ready to kick some butt, sir.

Warren smiles, briefly. He opens a com channel.

WARREN

Warren to engine room. Full power, Mr. Stevens.

STEVENS

(over com)

Aye, sir.

WARREN

Sound General Quarters. Charge weapons. Signal the seaFox squadron to follow us in.

Smith activates his headset. A klaxon sounds.

SMITH

(over com)

General Quarters, General Quarters. All hands, man battle stations.

Taylor turns from her station.

TAYLOR

Lasers powered up. Torpedoes charged and loaded.

Warren stands, and goes over to the helm.

WARREN

(sotto, to Piccolo)

Are you sure you’re OK, Tony?

Piccolo looks up.

PICCOLO

I’ll be fine. Besides… I kinda owe it to the team out there.

Warren pats him on the shoulder.

WARREN

(louder)

Set course for the complex, Lieutenant. All ahead full.

The camera zooms in on Warren. As it does so…

CUT TO seaFire - CARGO BAY DOOR

Two S7 operatives stand guard outside. The door raises, and Markov steps forward. The guard nearest him turns.

MARKOV

I want to speak to Monroe.

The other guard walks over, leaving his back to the door. (NB-neither guard can see the door)

S7 GUARD #1

General Monroe is… otherwise engaged, _sir_.

Markov nods. Suddenly, the boat rocks, knocking the guard off-balance. Markov reacts, slamming him into the wall. Behind him, the other guard reaches for his pulse pistol. The holster is empty. The guard turns, to see Monaghen holding the pistol.

MONAGHEN

Looking for this?

Before the guard can react, Monaghen floors him with a right hook. We cut back to see Markov flooring his opponent. He looks up, turns to the others.

MARKOV

Get them inside.

Four seaFire crewmembers drag the guards inside, where two more lie slumped in a corner. Markov takes a pulse rifle from another crewmember, who holds her rifle squarely at the captives.

MARKOV

If they try to escape, stun them.

seaFire CREWMAN #1

Aye, sir.

MARKOV

The rest of you, with me. Next stop: the armoury.

A group of ten seaFire crewmembers run out of the cargo bay with Markov. We pull back to see Joseph watching them go. She then turns, to lead her little group into the service conduit, all armed with pulse pistols. They enter the access door.

We cut to an overhead POV, as the last crewmember enters the conduit, letting the access door shut behind them. The room is almost deserted, save for the unconscious guards and a few crewmembers guarding them.

CUT TO ARCHANGEL-AIRLOCK CONTROL ROOM

We see a single Macronesian crewman standing by a console in the cramped room. Suddenly, he is hit in the back, then in the neck. He crumples to the floor. Stamp comes into view. He drags the crewman into the shadows, and turns to Scaros, who’s opening a locker.

STAMP

Are you sure about this?

Scaros turns, holding an oxygen mask, a pulse rifle strapped to his back.

SCAROS

No. But… it’s the only chance we’ve got.

Stamp smiles, holds out his hand. Scaros shakes it.

STAMP

Good luck, Lieutenant.

Stamp takes his pulse rifle, and hurries out of the door. Scaros straps on the oxygen mask, activates the console, and opens the inner airlock door in front of him. He walks into the airlock.

CUT TO EXT. ARCHANGEL

The camera focuses on the hull. We see a small door towards the ventral side of the sub slide open, and a small figure emerge. Explosions and weapons fire can be heard.

UNDERWATER

Scaros breathes heavily, as he stares around, keeping himself stationary. He sees a series of handholds along the side of the hull. Scaros grabs them, and starts to climb up.

We cut to a ‘refrigerator shot’ of Scaros climbing the handholds. He climbs up to our camera position, then looks “left” (from our POV)

(NB-Scaros wears a Macronesian design wetsuit)

CUT TO EXT. OCEAN

We see the seaFire in the near distance, exchanging fire with the complex’s weapons emplacements.

UNDERWATER

Scaros looks back, then up the ‘ladder’.

SCAROS

(muffled)

I have GOT to be out of mind.

He begins to climb again.

CUT TO seaFire-CORRIDOR

Markov and his team hurry down the corridor. They stop at an intersection. The camera focuses tight on Markov’s tense face, his pulse rifle drawn up, as he backs against the wall.

CUT TO EXT. EXCALIBUR

Gliding over the reefs, flanked by six seaFoxes.

INT. BRIDGE

We zoom in on Warren’s face, tense. He looks over at Taylor, who shows the same tension in her expression.

CUT TO ARCHANGEL-CORRIDOR

Barratt, Stamp and the rest of the team sit or crouch by the access ladder to the upper deck. We cut between Barratt and Stamp, waiting…

RAPID CUTS-VARIOUS

between: Warren, Markov, Barratt, Stamp, Taylor, Joseph and Scaros (in that order)

All tense, waiting…

EXT. OCEAN

The Excalibur soars overhead, towards the complex, visible in the near distance, where we see the seaFire again under fire. In its dock, the Archangel rests. Beside the Excalibur, the seaFoxes split, and fly into the haze.

Off the image…

FADE OUT:

END OF ACT TWO

ACT THREE

FADE IN:

EXT. OCEAN

On the ocean floor. A seaFox streaks past. Out of concealment, a laser turret rises into view, swivels and locks onto the fighter. Suddenly, a laser beam hits the turret, and destroys it. We see the Excalibur moving overhead.

INT. BRIDGE

Tight on Warren.

WARREN

Distance to target.

Blurred, rapid pan to Reyes.

REYES

One kilometre.

(beat, reacting to his console)

Sir, Archangel is powering up. Reactors critical-ready in ten minutes.

WARREN

Helm, ahead emergency.

PICCOLO

Aye, sir.

CUT TO seaFire-CORRIDOR

As before. Markov peeks around the corner. We see two S7 operatives standing guard by a door at the end of the corridor, labelled “Armoury”.

Markov pulls back, turns to his group, and signals two of them to follow him. They dive out of concealment, and open fire, felling the guards. Markov and the two crewmen hurry down to them. Markov signals the others.

MARKOV

(to others)

Arm yourselves.

They enter the armoury.

CUT TO EXT. OCEAN

We start at the seaFire, attacking the complex’s defence field. The camera moves forward, past the ‘Fire, and towards the Archangel. It passes over the hull, until we reach Scaros, still climbing the handholds. We see another airlock door just above him.

UNDERWATER

Scaros reaches the door. He takes a quick look through the porthole, and we see the room is deserted. Scaros hits a control panel by the door’s side, and it slides open.

ARCHANGEL BRIDGE

A small alarm goes off.

MACRONESIAN OFFICER #1

Pressure variation, Deck 4, Section 47C.

The OOD (Officer Of the Deck) goes over to the officer, checks the readout.

MACRONESIAN OOD

Probably due to the weapons fire.

(beat)

There, see, it’s gone. Keep an eye on it, just in case.

MACRONESIAN OFFICER #1

Aye, sir.

ARCHANGEL-AIRLOCK CONTROL ROOM #2

Slightly larger than the other control room, but with the same basic layout. The inner airlock door opens, and Scaros, his rifle out, sweeps the room. He rips off the oxygen mask, and uses the console to close the door. He looks around one more time, then exits into the corridor.

CUT TO seaFire-CORRIDOR

Markov and his group, now fully armed, walk down the corridor, the point guards sweeping it. There is a noise in the wall beside them, and they react, surrounding it, and charging their weapons. The access door springs open, and Joseph emerges.

JOSEPH

Hold your fire!

They lift up their weapons. Markov extends a hand to help Joseph up.

MARKOV

Are you alright?

Joseph nods.

JOSEPH

Fine, sir. But we couldn’t get to Engineering. The conduits are sealed at D Deck. No way down.

Markov sighs.

MARKOV

What about Aux Con?

JOSEPH

Negative, sir.

MARKOV

Dammit.

(beat)

Alright. We want to stop this, we go for the source.

(to Joseph)

How heavily guarded do you think the Bridge is?

Joseph smiles.

JOSEPH

Let’s find out.

She leads the rest of her team out. They are handed pulse rifles by other crewmembers, as the group moves off.

CUT TO ARCHANGEL-CORRIDOR

Scaros hurries down the nearly deserted corridor. (To anyone he passes, with his Macronesian wetsuit on, he looks like another security man, and they don’t react.) The boat suddenly rocks violently, throwing Scaros into the wall.

ARCHANGEL BRIDGE

Another hit. An officer turns to the OOD.

MACRONESIAN OFFICER #2

The complex’s defence field is down!

MACRONESIAN OOD

Reactors?

Another officer looks up from his console.

MACRONESIAN OFFICER #3

A few more minutes, sir.

The OOD begins pacing the deck.

MACRONESIAN OOD

Begin powering engines and weapons…

MACRONESIAN OFFICER #1

(interrupting)

Sir, another vessel has entered sensor range!

(beat, then, full of hatred)

It’s the Excalibur.

The OOD turns.

MACRONESIAN OOD

Send a transmission to Central Command. Inform President Bourne.

CUT TO seaFire BRIDGE

Still manned by S7 operatives. Monroe sits in the command chair.

S7 OPERATIVE #1

Sir, the Archangel is sending a transmission.

Monroe leans forward.

MONROE

Jam it.

S7 OPERATIVE #1

(O.S.)

Aye, sir.

Another operative walks over to Monroe.

S7 OPERATIVE #2

Sir…

Monroe turns, and looks at him.

S7 OPERATIVE #2

…we’ve lost contact with four of our guard teams.

Monroe’s eyes narrow.

MONROE

Markov…

seaFire-CORRIDOR

Markov’s team is now almost fifty strong. They come to a halt at a stairwell.

MARKOV

(to Joseph)

Commander, take a dozen people, and secure Engineering.

JOSEPH

Aye, sir.

That group descend the stairs. Markov turns to Monaghen.

MARKOV

Lieutenant, secure Aux Con.

Monaghen nods, and signals for about eight others to follow him down the corridor.

MARKOV

The rest of you… let’s go.

They ascend the stairs.

CUT TO ARCHANGEL-CORRIDOR

A small group of guards is stationed around an access ladder. We see Scaros run up to them.

GUARD #1

What’s going on?

SCAROS

(breathless)

There’s a firefight… Section 19. Looks like they’re trying to break out somewhere else.

The guards react.

GUARD #1

Alright. Murphy, you stay here, just in case. The rest of you, with me.

Four of the five guards move out, leaving Scaros alone with the remaining guard. Scaros makes as if he’s catching his breath, bent over, his hands on his thighs.

GUARD #2

Ran all the way here?

Scaros nods. The guard notices the still-dripping wetsuit.

GUARD #2

What happened?

Scaros looks up, and the guard indicates the wetsuit.

SCAROS

Oh, this? I was on duty in the launch bay, when we took a hit. Almost drowned.

He grins. So does the guard. As Scaros bends down again, he whips the rifle up, and fires. The guard falls to the floor.

SCAROS

Sorry, buddy. You were asking too many questions.

He goes over to the hatch covering the ladder, wrenches it up.

SCAROS

(calling out)

Commander!

ARCHANGEL-CORRIDOR (LOWER DECK)

Barratt and the others react to the shout.

SCAROS

(O.S.)

Up here!

Barratt smiles.

BARRATT

Let’s go.

ARCHANGEL-CORRIDOR

The team climb up the ladder, Jones just barely. Stamp takes up the rear.

BARRATT

Nice work, Josh.

SCAROS

(smiling)

Thank you, sir.

BARRATT

Let’s get the hell out of this death trap.

They hurry away, as quickly as they can, Stamp and Lockhart supporting Jones.

CUT TO seaFire-CORRIDOR

Markov and his team inching down the corridor, where a sign reads “A Deck”.

CUT TO ARCHANGEL-DOCKING TUNNEL

The team reaches the tunnel, and hurry across into the complex.

CUT TO seaFire-CORRIDOR

They close on the clamshell doors leading to the bridge. Two guards lie slumped on either side.

CUT TO ARCHANGEL DOCKING COMPLEX

Barratt and the others are approaching the Masada’s airlock. Suddenly, a laser blast streaks over their heads. We see a large contingent of guards running down the corridor towards them, firing as they do so.

BARRATT

Look out!

They duck behind cover.

STAMP

Dammit, not now!

(to Lockhart)

See if you can reach the controls.

Lockhart nods, and hurries around to the airlock. As Stamp and Barratt increase their fire, to attract the guard’s attention, she stands, and activates the controls. The airlock slides open.

LOCKHART

Got it!

BARRATT

Move out!

They start to pile into the airlock, the others providing covering fire. Soon, it’s just Barratt, Scaros and Stamp.

BARRATT

Move it, Josh!

Scaros looks at the open airlock, then back at Barratt.

SCAROS

No, sir. You first.

Barratt looks at Stamp, who nods, then runs into the airlock. He then turns to Scaros.

BARRATT

Josh, let’s go!

SCAROS

(still looking at the guards)

Not until you’re through, sir!

Barratt hesitates, then runs to the airlock. He hangs back in the door.

BARRATT

Josh, come on!

Scaros heads for the airlock. But, instead of entering it:

SCAROS

(sotto)

I’m sorry, sir.

He shoves Barratt into the airlock, and hits the control to seal the door. It closes, leaving him on the outside. He then blasts the control panel, frying the controls.

MASADA SHUTTLE

(INTERCUT WITH ARCHANGEL DOCKING COMPLEX AS NECESSARY)

Barratt pounds the controls.

BARRATT

Josh!

SCAROS

Get out of here, Commander! You’ll never make it out if you don’t go now!

BARRATT

I can’t just leave you here!

SCAROS

You don’t have a choice!

Scaros begins to return fire again.

BARRATT

(desperate)

Josh!

SCAROS

Just go!

Stamp pulls Barratt away from the airlock, and he slumps into a chair. Stamp strides forward.

STAMP

Get us out of here!

Hargrove, at the controls, nods.

EXT. DOCKING COMPEX

The Masada pulls away from the complex.

INT. ARCHANGEL DOCKING COMPLEX

Scaros glances at the airlock, smiles, as around him, laser fire dances across the walls.

EXT. OCEAN

The Excalibur fires on a Lysander, as the seaFire lurches suddenly.

INT. BRIDGE

Warren grips the command console, as the boat rocks.

SMITH

Sir, the seaFire’s engines just shut down!

Warren looks up.

SMITH

Wait… they’re back up again.

(beat)

Incoming transmission from the ‘Fire.

WARREN

Put it through.

Markov’s face appears on the screen, smiling. We can see seaFire crewmembers leading S7 operatives away.

MARKOV

Sorry about the scare, Excalibur, but we had to take care of our… problem first.

Warren smiles

WARREN

That’s OK, Captain. It’s good to see you again.

Reyes’ console beeps suddenly. He looks, then turns quickly to Warren.

REYES

Sir, I have a Masada-class shuttle on the map!

Warren turns.

WARREN

ID code?

Reyes checks.

REYES

UEO-7100/4!

Warren whirls around.

WARREN

All seaFoxes, converge on the Masada!

Smith looks up.

SMITH

(horrified)

Sir…

He turns.

SMITH

The Archangel is active.

Warren looks up in horror.

EXT. OCEAN

As the seaFoxes cover the Masada, the Archangel slowly and menacingly moves out of the dock, straight towards Excalibur and seaFire.

FADE OUT:

END OF ACT THREE

ACT FOUR

FADE IN:

EXT. OCEAN

The Archangel continues to pull out of dock.

INT. BRIDGE

Warren turns to Reyes.

WARREN

How far away is the Masada?

REYES

Thirty seconds.

Warren turns back to face the screen, which shows the Archangel closing.

WARREN

Mr. Piccolo.

PICCOLO

Sir?

WARREN

Fire AMJs and rotate the ship, bearing 015.

PICCOLO

Aye, sir.

EXT. OCEAN

The Excalibur comes about, so the hydrosphere is squarely facing the Masada and her seaFox escort. She’s also pointing away from the complex.

INT. BRIDGE

Warren stands up.

WARREN

Tell the seaFoxes to come in too. We’ll sort out ownership later.

SMITH

Aye, sir.

Warren activates the com channel.

WARREN

Warren to engine room. Mr. Stevens?

STEVENS

Aye, sir?

WARREN

Ready the pulse turbines.

STEVENS

Aye, sir.

EXT. EXCALIBUR

A series of smaller turbines emerges from the Excalibur’s rear hull assembly, and glow with power.

The Masada turns, and enters the hydrosphere, the seaFoxes right behind.

INT. BRIDGE

Smith turns.

SMITH

They’re on board.

Warren turns.

WARREN

Helm, all ahead emergency. Activate the pulse turbines.

REYES

Archangel coming about, with orders to pursue.

EXT. OCEAN

The Excalibur suddenly darts forward at incredible speed, closely followed by the seaFire. The Archangel finishes her turn, and pursues.

INT. BRIDGE

The crew are forced back in their seats by the incredible acceleration.

PICCOLO

Speed now passing 310 kph. Continuing to accelerate.

WARREN

Trish, send a tight-beam encoded transmission to the seaQuest. Tell them to stand by.

TAYLOR

Aye, sir.

WARREN

I’ll be on C Deck. Dan, with me.

Smith looks up, then follows.

EXT. OCEAN

seaFire and Excalibur, chased by Archangel, who seems to be gaining, ever so slowly.

INT. C DECK-LAUNCH BAY 2

Warren and Smith enter, to see medical staff, led by Dr. Stratton, attending to the injured. Jones is on a gurney, being taken away. Warren and Smith step up to Barratt and Stamp. Elsewhere, we see the seaFox pilots being escorted out of the bay by several crewmen.

WARREN

John, Dave, it’s good to have you back.

They smile, weakly. Warren notices, looks around.

WARREN

What happened?

(beat)

Where’s Josh Scaros?

Barratt sighs, and looks at Warren. From the expression in Barratt’s eyes, Warren knows what’s happened.

WARREN

(sotto)

Oh, man…

The boat rocks.

CLARK

(over com)

Captain to the bridge! Captain to the bridge! All senior officers, report to the bridge immediately!

Warren gets out his PAL, activates it.

WARREN

Lieutenant, what happened?

BRIDGE

Clark looks up from his console.

CLARK

Sir, we’ve entered the Archangel’s weapons range.

C DECK-LAUNCH BAY 2

Warren looks up.

WARREN

Alright, I’m on my way. Can we power up the defence field?

He’s on his way out of the bay as he says this, closely followed by Barratt, Smith and Stamp. Barratt and Stamp shed their blankets as they get up.

CLARK

Negative, sir. All WSKRS have been recalled. Our speed is passing 325.

C DECK-CORRIDOR

The four men walk into and down the corridor.

STAMP

325? The hull structure isn’t designed for that sort of speed.

Warren looks behind, a little surprised that Stamp and Barratt have followed, but carries on.

WARREN

I’m well aware of that, Dave.

(into PAL)

Push it right to the edge, Lieutenant.

CLARK

Aye, sir.

The PAL goes off.

STAMP

I’d better get to Engineering.

He splits off into an adjoining corridor. Warren and the others enter the MagLev.

EXT. OCEAN

The Archangel rakes both UEO ships with laser fire, as all three scream across the ocean floor.

CUT TO EXT. OCEAN

The seaQuest holds position, with three other subs.

INT. seaQuest BRIDGE

Waiting. Ford looks around.

FORD

(to O’Neil)

Anything, Tim?

O’Neil checks his console.

O’NEIL

No, sir.

(beat)

Hold on.

Ford looks over. Wolenczak straightens up from his slouched position.

O’NEIL

(turning to Ford)

Tight-beam transmission, sir. Audio only.

FORD

Source?

O’NEIL

The Excalibur.

Ford stands, exchanges a look with Wolenczak.

FORD

Put it through.

O’NEIL

Aye, sir.

He hits a control.

TAYLOR

(over com)

UEO seaQuest, this is the Excalibur. Authentication code: Alpha Zulu 69 Charlie. Enroute. ETA: 19 minutes and counting.

(beat)

Archangel is active and pursuing.

The com beeps off. Wolenczak checks his console.

WOLENCZAK

Authentication code confirmed. It’s the Excalibur.

Ford smiles, then gets down to business.

FORD

Helm, lay in a course for the rendezvous point. Tim, signal the fleet.

He takes off the seaQuest arming key, and inserts it into the keyhole.

FORD

Computer, activate Osiris Weapons System. Unlock code: 14-54-97.

COMPUTER VOICE

Osiris active. Powering pulse laser nodes. Centium missiles loading. Initiating weapons bay release.

EXT. seaQuest

The sub seems to morph. Four pulse laser nodes emerge from the hull, and near the hydrosphere, two bays expand on either side, torpedo tubes cycling open. The hull seems to glisten.

INT. seaQuest BRIDGE

Wolenczak turns.

WOLENCZAK

Osiris system activated. Hull polarisation on-line.

FORD

Nice modifications, Lucas.

Wolenczak smiles.

EXT. OCEAN

The seaQuest and her entourage head out.

EXT. EXCALIBUR

Under fire from the Archangel. She returns with a few blasts from her aft lasers, but the energy pouring from the pulse turbines dissipates the laser fire, causing little impact.

INT. BRIDGE

The hull moans and creaks ominously. Warren looks around at it. Barratt is back at the XO station. Clark and Smith are at the Ops Table, checking displays.

WARREN

Hull status?

BARRATT

Integrity at 74% and dropping.

WARREN

Activate transverse bulkheads. Seal all outer compartments.

The boat rocks, as it takes another hit.

BARRATT

Bioskin layer 1 breached. Layers 2 and 3 holding for now.

Warren turns to Clark.

WARREN

Time to the border?

CLARK

12 minutes.

WARREN

So we have to hold on for another 12 minutes…

He turns his attention to his console, starts inputting a series of figures and equations. An image of the Excalibur appears, various computations running across it. Warren continues to input figures, his typing growing faster.

WARREN

(not looking up)

Reroute structural integrity to G Deck, Sections 19-34.

CLARK

Aye, sir.

As Warren keeps going, the ship rocks again and again.

TAYLOR

EM torpedo!

WARREN

Reinforce power grid!

Another, more violent impact.

BARRATT

Hull breach, J Deck, Section 77. We’re taking on water.

WARREN

Activate hull siphons, Commander.

(beat, off his console)

Reinforce lateral hull struts on J Deck, Sections 41-aft.

TAYLOR

Power grid stable!

Another hit. A console sparks.

PICCOLO

Captain, they’re trying to outflank us!

BARRATT

(sotto, to Warren)

We can’t risk evasive manoeuvres, not at this speed; we’ll tear the hull apart.

Another hit.

CUT TO ENGINE ROOM

Sparks fly from a support conduit. The fusion core glows brightly in the centre of the room, so bright that all personnel are wearing blackened goggles. Frantic action.

STAMP

Maintain engine speed!

CREWMAN

We’re red-lining, Commander!

ENSIGN

Containment field is approaching critical!

Stamp hurries over to a console, hits some controls.

STAMP

Reroute power from Launch Bay systems to the containment field!

CREWMAN

Aye, sir.

The glow fades slightly.

STAMP

(breathing out)

Status?

The Ensign checks his console.

ENSIGN

Containment field is stable.

Stamp activates his PAL.

STAMP

Bridge, we just bought you a few more minutes. You’ve got engine power.

BRIDGE

Warren leans forward.

WARREN

Push it right to the edge, Tony.

PICCOLO

Aye, sir!

EXT. OCEAN

The Excalibur roars ahead.

CUT TO EXT. OCEAN

seaQuest leads a fleet of a dozen UEO ships to a halt. The Osiris Weapon System can be seen, glowing with power.

INT. seaQuest BRIDGE

The atmosphere is tense. Everyone’s waiting for something. Suddenly, O’Neil’s console comes to life, beeping loudly.

O’NEIL

Confirmed contacts. Bearing 183, and approaching fast. Three ships.

FORD

Have the fleet form up. Formation: Welcoming Committee.

O’NEIL

Aye, sir.

EXT. OCEAN

The fleet splits into two rows, with a gap between them. We can just about see the flashes of weapons fire ahead.

FORD

(O.S.)

Stand by…

The Excalibur suddenly roars into view, streaking past the UEO subs. The seaFire follows close behind.

FORD

(O.S.)

All ships, open fire!

The fleet blankets the water with weapons fire. We see the Archangel tip up on its side, and veer away from the hailstorm of laser pulses. The seaQuest’s pulse lasers tear into her side, as the Macronesian sub disappears into the haze once more.

INT. seaQuest BRIDGE

O’Neil turns to Ford.

O’NEIL

The Archangel has broken off pursuit.

Ford breathes out.

FORD

Get me the Excalibur.

O’NEIL

Aye, sir.

(beat)

Captain Warren on the line.

Warren’s face appears on the screen. We can see clean-up crews working on the bridge behind him.

FORD

Welcome back, Captain.

The expression on Warren’s face doesn’t lighten. He looks worn out, and his face is blackened by smoke.

WARREN

I’m not sure it’s good to be back, Jonathan.

Ford reacts to Warren’s reply.

FORD

Everything OK?

Warren shakes his head.

WARREN

Request permission to come aboard?

FORD

(worried)

Sure.

The screen goes blank. Ford, Wolenczak and O’Neil all exchange looks.

CUT TO EXT. OCEAN

Off the UEO ships, closing on the Excalibur and seaFire…

FADE OUT:

END OF ACT FOUR

ACT FIVE

FADE IN:

EXT. EXCALIBUR

A shuttle emerges from the hydrosphere doors, and heads for the seaQuest.

EXT. seaQuest

The shuttle enters the seaQuest’s hydrosphere.

INT. seaQuest HYDROSPHERE

(NB-This scene (and, unless noted, subsequent scenes) is in total silence)

Ford, Wolenczak and O’Neil wait in the Launch Bay, as the bay door opens, and Warren steps out. They move off, out of the Bay.

WARREN

(V.O.)

Captain’s Log, May 21st, 2040.

EXCALIBUR CORRIDOR

Barratt and Stamp walk down the corridor, talking. Suddenly, Barratt stops, looking at something. Stamp looks at him, then at what he’s looking at. The camera pans across to a door, which reads “LT. J.G. JOSH SCAROS”. Stamp looks back at Barratt, his expression one of concern. He says something to Barratt, pats his shoulder, and moves off. Barratt waits for a moment, then follows.

WARREN

(V.O.)

We survived our trial by fire, our first major test.

(beat)

But, where we go from here, no-one knows.

seaQuest WARDROOM

Warren hands Wolenczak a hard disk (the same one Stamp pocketed in Part Two), who inserts it into a computer terminal. On the main screen, a series of displays pop up, and schematics of the Archangel appear, with scrolling text and images. Ford and O’Neil step up to the screen with Warren. They study the data, and begin to point things out, as Wolenczak leaves the terminal and comes to join them.

WARREN

(V.O.)

The data we gathered will prove invaluable in future encounters with the Archangel…

(beat)

…and I have no doubt those encounters will come soon.

seaFire BRIDGE

Markov sits in the command chair, Joseph by his side. They exchange concerned glances.

WARREN

The seaFire was a key asset in this mission… in one way or another.

seaFire-GUEST QUARTERS

Monroe lies on his bunk, smiling slightly.

WARREN

However, I’m concerned about Section 7’s actions during the mission.

(beat)

What was it they were trying to do?

EXCALIBUR CORRIDOR

Warren walks down the corridor, closely followed by Barratt, Stamp, Smith and Taylor, the Big Four. (NB-slow motion tracking shot)

WARREN

(V.O.)

What was their mission, and who ordered it?

We follow them into the MagLev.

EXT. EXCALIBUR

We see the bioskin forming a “scab” of material over the hull breach in the aft section. seaCrabs and other TeamCraft subs dart around the ship.

WARREN

(V.O.)

The Excalibur suffered minor damage in our escape from Macronesian territory, and repairs are underway. We’re setting a course for Pearl Harbour, to deliver our “gift” to McGath.

INT. A DECK

Continuing the tracking shot.

Warren and the others emerge from the MagLev, and walk onto the bridge, where Clark relinquishes the command console.

As the officers settle into their stations, the shot changes back to real time.

WARREN

Helm, lay in a course for UEO Headquarters, best possible speed.

PICCOLO

Aye, sir.

Warren looks over at the upper deck, where Scaros’ chair lies empty. We can see the pain in his eyes.

EXT. OCEAN

Excalibur comes about, and moves forward, into camera. seaFire and seaQuest follow close behind.

INT. WARREN’S QUARTERS

We see Warren sitting at his desk, his chair swivelled to face the porthole. He stares into the depths.

WARREN

Our casualties were light. Seventeen injured, none seriously. And two fatalities… Lieutenant Commander Stephanie Abbey, an S7 operative assigned to the team… and Lieutenant Amy Jones, who died in surgery two hours ago.

(beat)

Lieutenant Junior Grade Josh Scaros is as yet unaccounted for… but we’re not holding out much hope.

He sighs, and takes a long time before continuing.

WARREN

Commendations are to be awarded to the entire team… for their dedication to duty and courage in the face of fire.

FADE CUT TO BRIDGE

Barratt sitting at the command console.

WARREN

(beat)

Special commendations must go to Commander John Barratt, whose cool-headed command of the team was a key factor in the success of this mission.

FADE CUT TO WARREN’S QUARTERS

Warren sighs again.

WARREN

…and to Lt. Scaros, whose heroic sacrifice allowed the team to escape with the vital data.

Let it be noted that he gave his life to save this ship, and its crew, in pursuit of his duty.

Taylor enters the room, knocking lightly as she does so. Warren notices in the window’s reflection, and turns.

WARREN

Computer, pause entry.

A beep. Taylor walks over to him.

TAYLOR

You OK?

Warren looks up, smiles lightly.

WARREN

Not really. I don’t think I’ll be OK for a while yet.

She puts her arm around him, and sits on his lap.

TAYLOR

There wasn’t anything you could have done.

WARREN

I know. But I can’t help thinking “What could I have done differently?” What if I had been on the team, and John here? What if…

He stops himself, but Taylor knows what he’s thinking.

TAYLOR

What if you had sent me instead of Josh?

We can see tears welling in both their eyes.

WARREN

I mean, I’ve lost people under my command on this ship… but never someone I really know, say hello to every day, walk onto the Bridge and expect to see them there…

TAYLOR

(softly)

I know.

WARREN

I looked around, saw that empty station… and I almost lost it there and then, Trish.

(beat)

If this war comes… and it will, it will… we’re going to lose a lot more people.

They both stare out of the porthole.

TAYLOR

Like you told me…

EXT. EXCALIBUR

Cruising away.

TAYLOR

“Don’t worry about tomorrow…”

A beat.

WARREN

“…it comes soon enough…”

We see seaFire and seaQuest behind.

WARREN

(V.O., after a moment)

Continue entry.

INT. BRIDGE

All are assembled. Barratt looks back at Warren, who stares ahead.

WARREN

(V.O.)

Sooner or later, we’re all going to be asked to make that sacrifice for those we care about.

(beat)

I hope, when it’s my turn, that I see it through with the same strength of character.

ENGINE ROOM

Stamp looks around at the room.

WARREN

(V.O.)

There’s a quote, by Tennyson, which sprung to mind while I was making this entry. It seemed… appropriate somehow:

seaQuest BRIDGE

Like the Excalibur, the crew are all in position. Wolenczak stands behind Ford.

WARREN

(V.O.)

“Tho’ we are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven…”

seaFire BRIDGE

Again, as the others. We see Markov, Joseph, Simpson and Monaghen at their stations.

BARRATT

(V.O.)

“…that which we are, we are.”

EXT. OCEAN

The three subs move slowly through the depths.

SMITH

(V.O.)

“One equal temper of heroic hearts…”

STAMP

(V.O.)

“Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will.”

RAPID CUT TO BRIDGE

Tight on Warren.

TAYLOR

(V.O.)

“To strive…”

Rapid cuts between the crew as the following speech continues:

PARKER

(V.O.)

“To seek…”

CLARK

(V.O.)

“To find…”

EXT. OCEAN

As the subs disappear into the haze.

WARREN

(V.O.)

“…And not to yield.”
