The government wanted the perfect
soldiers, so they built them, starting with the best DNA money could buy, and
Project Manticore was born. There were many attempts to create the perfect
soldiers, but class X5 was the first that showed potential. One night in February of
2009, the X5 escaped from their cellblock at the secret government facility in
Gillette, Wyoming. Twelve of these soldiers made it over the perimeter fence and
escaped. In June of that same year terrorists set off an electromagnetic bomb that
fried every computer chip of any kind east of the Rocky Mountains, allowing these
soldiers to virtually disappear. This bomb has been nicknamed "the pulse."
Nevertheless, Colonel Lydecker (played by John Savage), the man in charge of
class X5's training, has been hunting them down. Max is one of these escaped
soldiers and trained killing machines. She's made a life for herself as a bike
messenger in Seattle, Washington. This is where the story of Dark Angel begins. At
the end of season 1, by a strange twist of fate, Max and three of her "siblings"
attempt to take down Manticore with Lydecker's help. Max and her brother Zack end
up being captured.
Season 2 starts with Max and the other transgenics at another Manticore facility just outside Seattle. Max escapes, Eyes Only broadcasts the location of the facility, and the director is ordered to cauterize the site. Max returns as the place is going up in flames and unlocks all the cell doors, releasing both transgenics and anomalies. Season 2 is filled with Max's struggle to save her fellow Manticore alumni from both capture and exposure.
