The selective breeding process followed by
Familiars is to kill the first two children born to a couple and keep the third child.
Once this third child has been born, the mother is killed. However, why this is done
and wether the mother is spared if she is a Familiar are unknown. Before that child
is ten years old, he or she must proove themselves. If they were meant to be a
Familiar, they will survive the initiation test.
However, one Familiar decided to break with tradition. Richard Sademan was a Familiar and a scientist. He wanted to test members scientifically to see if they would live or die if given the virus. The Conclave declared his ideas heresy, stating it wasn't the way things were done. Sandeman continued with his genetic research, testing it on his son C.J. He found that C.J. would die if forced to proove himself so Sandeman hid him from the Conclave and ran. Unfortunately the Conclave found C.J. and locked him up in an asylum they owned, simply because he knew too much about them. Sandeman on the other hand continued his research, trying to create a being capable of thwarting the Conclave's plans. His genetic research caught the attention of the U.S. government, who twisted his plans into what would become Manticore, a gentic research project designed to create superior soldiers and assassains. Sandeman was forced to flee from Manticore, but not before succeeding with his plans to undermind the Conclave.
After Manticore was exposed and Agent Ames White was put in charge of transgenic extermination, C.J. escaped and found his way to Max. He turned her over to Ames, his older brother, in exchange for his permanent freedom from the asylum. While captured Ames informed Max he changed his last name to White to rid himself of his father's shame, namely his attempt to destroy the Conclav'es 5000 years of planning. When C.J. realized Max was the unique being who would save humanity from the Familiars, he turned on his brother and set Max free. What made Max so special (beside her ancient markings and Familiar-sensing ability) and how she would defeat an ancient cult we'll never know because FOX cancelled the show abruptly.
