Familiars are members of an ancient breeding cult that has
been preparing themselves for something they call The Coming through selective
breeding. The people in charge the Familiars are known only as the Conclave. This
group of people selects breeding partners for their members, handles punishment
of members who fail to complete a task or step out of line and generally make all
decisions concerning Familiars' roles within the cult.
Familiars worship a breed of snakes that act as carriers for a unique virus, one all true Familiars are immune to. To be considered a true Familiar, children of Familiars must first proove themselves before they are fully inducted into the cult. Besides their natural immunity to a unique virus, Familiars are stronger, faster and more agile than the average human. They also feel no pain, however, unlike Red Soldiers this ability is genetic and not a by product of an adreneline overdose within their bodies. The only threat to the Familiars' plans are transgenics. Created by one of their own who left the cult, transgenics are immune to the virus because of science and not natural selection. The X-series in particular also possess many traits of Familiars, such as being stronger, faster and more agile than the average human. Therefore, the Conclave wants and needs all transgenics destroyed.
