When you live in the worst part of town, have few friends, and your whole life is in shambles, it can be described in one word- "cruddy".
This narrative is the story is about Roberta a sixteen year old girl and two alternating stories of her own between past and present. In the past Roberta is kidnapped by her dad, who refused to consider her a girl. So he pretends Roberta is his son, Clyde. Clyde is his accomplice in certain crimes involving knives and money fraud. However in the present she meets Vicky and they are going to run away from home, with two boys they've just barly began to know. In this part of her life she discovers more of of an adult life with sex and drugs. They take their own road trip and there is where Roberta tell s her story of the past.
Linda Barry writes and illistrates in Cruddy, a disturbing plot with disturbing pictures. Though the cover may look a littl weird, go read it anyways. It's an excellent book, dispite all the plot twist. I'll say this much, the book will always keep you guessing what happens next.

The unique tale of Shadow's post-prison life, American Gods by Neil Gaiman also takes a look at the status of religion in America. Though Nietzsche claimed "God is dead," this novel proves it wrong in one sense at least by questioning the idea of what a religion is.
But this book isn't a dry look at religion- it's the story of Shadow, who gets hired by the mysterious Mr. Wednesday as a chauffer/bodygaurd. Mr. Wednesday leads Shadow all over the country, with many adventures, including an ill-fated game of checkers in Chicago.
Probably Neil Gaiman's most thought-inspiring work to date, American Gods has a solid enough plot to interest the casual reader amd enough content for the deep thinker alike.
