Welcome to my Family Search
Hosted by www.Geocities.ws

Genealogy is more than just a hobby. It can become an addiction! We search our family history in many strange places. We stumble through forgotten graveyards, and sneeze our way through dusty vital records archives.  We search out our ancestors in census indexes, passenger lists, Church records and various finding aids. We beg (bug?) our elders for any bit of memories they can dredge upl We discuss the events of a hundred years ago and how they might have influenced the lives of our ancestors. We are ga-ga over GEDCOMS and thrilled about old newspaper clippings. A marriage certificate dated 1852 is a treasure to be wondered at.

Most of all, the Genealogy hobbyist loves to share! We work with each other and share our findings with anybody that may be interested in "our line".

My cousin, Betsy, and I have been working together on our lines for two years and have become more than just cousins. Our Family Search has created a strong bond between us. We would like to share our work with you now. Feel free to contact us at the addresses given at the bottom of this page. We would love to hear from you. If you have a question or comment you may email us directly or leave your email address in the guestbook.

GEORGE T. BROWN

Many of our ancestors arrived in Kentucky around 1800. It is believed that they moved with the Catholic Migration from Maryland around 1790 to 1810. It is known that GEORGE T. BROWN was born in Nelson County, KY in Dec. 1812. No information has yet been found about his parentage. According to all the census records, George's Mother and Father were both born in Maryland. George married Juliet Ann Lush in Hardin County, KY in 1836. We have a lot of information on this family from George forward, but have not been able to identify his parents. Contact: Betsy or Arlene

SURNAMES IN NEW YORK, CAYUGA COUNTY

CARTER

My first know ancestor in this line is Chauncy Carter b: 2 Nov 1806 in Sterling Cayuga Co, NY and died: 6 Aug 1883 in Walkerville, Oceana Co, MI. It is believed his parents were Nathan Carter and Polly Kent daughter of Charles Kent. If this is true I need documentation. It is also believed that this Nathan changed the surname from McCarter/ McCarty/ or something similar to Carter. Chauncy married 6 Feb 1830 in New York to Huldah Isham b: 25 Oct 1808 in Bristol, Addison Co, VT. To parents David Isham and Thankful Hooker. (Her real name!) Huldah died 12 Sept 1901 in Walkerville, Oceana Co, MI and they are both buried in the Old Pioneer Carpenter Cemetery in Walkerville.

I have quite a bit of information from Chauncy down to me, but I need his parents for sure and some history of the family. They were supposed to have migrated from County Cork, Ire. Contact: Betsy

GREENWELL

Researching the Arnal John Greenwell and Mary Brown line. Have the Greenwells but need more information on Mary. Also many, more. Most lived in Grayson County. Contact: Betsy or Arlene

HOOKER

The Rev Thomas Hooker line from him to Thankful Hooker, born 14 April 1774. She married David Isham 27 Mar 1791 in CT. Contact: Betsy

The above-mentioned New York and Ohio families eventually migrated to Michigan in the counties of Monroe, Branch around 1840 and were in Oceana by July of 1885. I am desperately seeking information on the Carter surname in New York! Contact: Betsy

JAMES

See ROSE Below

KELLY/ KELLEY

I descend from Elijah Kelley, born 1787 in Grayson County, KY and died between 1834 and 1837, and his wife, Elizabeth Unknown died about 1879. They were married about 1814 in KY. Of their seven children my line descends through
Martin Kelly b: 1815 and his second wife Elender Moore b: bat 1824 in Edmonson Co, KY. They were married 28 Oct 1852 in Edmonson Co. KY by Jesse Moon. I now have their marriage bond and certificate! But I need to know more about Elender (she wrote her name this way, but most documents spell her name as Eleanor) and her family. Who were her parents? Did she have other brothers and sisters besides Lutetia who married John, the son of Martin and his first wife Rebecca Troutman Kelly? Martin and Elender lived on the Green River near Brownsville in Edmonson Co, KY until her death in about 1868. Martin then moved back to the Beaver Dam Creek area where he married Susannah Smothers Hazelwood the widow of James Hazelwood and daughter of Daniel and Sally Love Smothers.

One of Martin and Elender's sons was Ephriam, my great grandfather. He was born 17 Nov 1854 supposedly in Peonia, Grayson Co, KY. He married 23 Feb 1876 in Grayson Co, KY to Mary Ellen Shepherd b: 1858 in Providence, KY. She was the daughter of John Shepherd and Sarah Hazelwood. I need to know more of this family, where they came from, how many children did they have, etc. Ephriam and Mary Ellen (as her family called her) lived on a farm in Peonia, not far from St. Anthony Catholic Church. Ephriam died 6 March 1922 in Peonia and is buried in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, across from the farm. I think Mary Ellen is buried in St. Paul Cemetery. I need that information and her death date.
Ephriam and Mary Ellen's 5th child was my grandfather; Lanus Francis Kelley You will notice the changing of the surname from Kelly to Kelley. When, why and who changed the name is a mystery. Does anyone know? I know my grandfather was adamant about the spelling!

Lanus was born 26 Oct 1890 in Peonia on the family farm. He married 22 May 1921 in Pawnee, Sangamon Co, IL to Martha Elizabeth Brown b: 2 Dec 1908 in Grayson Co, KY. She was the first born child of Thomas Brown and Sarah Tom Alvey. Lanus died 7 July 1981 in Leitchfield, KY and is buried in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Peonia, Grayson Co, KY. Lizzie (as she was called) died 8 Aug 1985 in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co, KY and is buried by her husbands side. For more information about these people or to share what you have about them, contact Betsy at the address below.
