30 Seconds to Mars

30 Seconds to Mars has landed, and from the sound of this album, the band won't be departing earth anytime soon.

In fact, the initial success of "30 Seconds to Mars" suggests that "so-called" Hollywood heartthrob Jared Leto could end up making a greater impact on this planet as a bandleader than as an actor.

He and the Mars crew rocketed to the No. 1 slot on Billboard's Heatseekers chart with their debut disc, and for good reason. The emergence of their eerily unique sound is a breath of fresh air among recent bubblegum pop and rock releases.

The album's first single, "Capricorn," which garnered a great deal of underground and college radio play, explores disappearing and starting over "with a brand new name" by way of intricately penned lyrics.

Futuristic, space-like intros and guitar riffs on tracks like "93 Million Miles" and "Echelon" are similar to that of Incubus and classic rock veterans Pink Floyd. The sound is undeniably hard rock, but laced with subtle hints of electronica and otherworldliness.

Final thought: If you are looking for an edgy new sound with techno-goth undertones and a distinctly different feel, "30 Seconds to Mars" is well worth your time.
