The Site: I envision the area directly in front of the pentagon being transformed into an informal memorial park with trees, wildflowers, walkways and benches creating an atmosphere conducive towards tranquility, reflection and insight.  In this place of meditation, each individual would have the opportunity to speculate on how the momentous events of September 11th have impacted and will continue to impact each life on this planet.  Each person might consider how their own perspective has changed and may never stop changing.

The instrument is larger than life, focusing on simplified glass silhouettes throughout this informal memorial park - an individual memorial for each of the victims who gave up their own personal freedom for all of us on that day.  Placed throughout the park, the glass silhouettes will be visible from a distance to create a reverently haunting image indicative of the tragedy, yet uplifting as the strength of spirit of those individuals are remembered.  The clear glass silhouettes would interrupt the overall vista as each element is experienced distinctly signifying the halt in the day's activities, yet allowing the realization of needing to move ahead and start healing.  Three different tints of tempered glass could be used to show a visual distinction of the victims; civilian, military and passengers.

During the daylight hours the glass silhouettes will reflect the world, as it is today, continuing to function and moving ahead in spite of the events of September 11th.  In the evening, illuminated from underground, the silhouettes will exemplify the light blazing through the darkness, imposing upon the world that even through the troubled times brought about by this horrible act, hope and perseverance will always shine through.

Moving through the silhouettes, a personal history of each victim will be experienced as one reads the engravings created by family members to honor their loved one.  Being able to personalize each glass silhouette will bring into view, the closeness of the tragedy to each and every one of us.  We have all been personally touched in one way or another by the events of September 11th.

Below  is what is  engraved on a piece of glass that has been built into the presentation board.  The presentation board has actually been cut away in this are so that you can see clearly through the glass to get a feeling for the engraved silhouettes.

In Memoriam
11.September 2001

father?  mother?  brother?  sister?
husband?  wife?  son?  daughter?
friend?  enemy?  rich?  poor?
so many questions and so many answers.
who will ask and who will respond?
how momentous
yet will things change?
for some yes, for others no.
the sun will continue its journey.
for some the earth will continue to rotate
and not be slowed down by this moment.
for some the earth will stop moving
but the sun will continue on its journey.
the moment will last a lifetime
and change their lives.
who might it be?
father?  mother?  brother?  sister?
husband?  wife?  son?  daughter?
friend?  enemy?  rich?  poor?
all or none?
everyone or no one?
as the sun sets this day
only they will know
if their world will continue
or fade with the sun
