Gig Reviews by Colin

London Brixton Academy 30.03.01

It was a long time that I had not seen msp live doing a gig so I was happy to see them twice in two days in London. I arrived at the venue around 3pm and there was loads of people already there. So I decided to look out for any people I knew and talk to loads of people while waiting for the doors to open. Finally around 7pm the doors open and everybody got in, the first band was My Vitriol that I like very much I had seen them in Paris a few days before, they played for about 40 min in London and the crowd seems to like them. When MSP came on stage everybody was happy and excited, they started with Found That Soul, which I thought was excellent and played various songs off all the various albums they have done, like Motorcycle Emptiness, Australia, La Tristesse Durera... I thought the gig was good and that they were happy to play live again. My favourite songs of the gig were Found That Soul, Motorcycle Emptiness, You Love Us and A Design For Life. I think the best moment of the gig was when Nicky said something unpleasant about the Time Out journalist saying that he knew nothing about them... A Design For Life was the song they played last and by the end of the gig I felt tired. Spoke to a few people and went back to my hotel.

I arrived on Saturday at the venue at 11am and there was already 20 people there, then I talk to various people I knew then went to a pub around 5pm to meet some other MSP fans, went back to the venue around 7.20pm. My Vitriol played another good set. The gig was really much better than the first night in my opinion. They started again with Found That Soul, on Saturday they played 21 songs, some from the new album, I do not know why they play Miss Europa live well anyway I do not like it others were ok like So Why So Sad, Ocean Spray... Played a few songs from TIMTTMY like You Stole The Sun, If You Tolerate... We had stuff from the Holy Bible like Faster, Yes, some from EMG like A Design For Life, Kevin Carter and from GT Motorcycle Emptiness and from GATS La Tristesse Durera... So a little bit of everything the gig was pretty similar to the night before, with a few changes. I thought they played much better than the previous gig. At the end of the gig Nicky started to trash everything on stage but compared to T In The Park 99 (me: thanks for the video of that Colin, it was quite something) the trashing of equipment was low key. Finally after the gig spoke again to a few people I knew then bought myself a bootleg tee shirt of MSP for 5 cheaper than the official ones and went back to my hotel happy.

Paris FNAC Montparnasse 5.4.01

MSP were doing an acoustic session to promote the new album in Europe. Today they were in Paris. I went with a few friends at 12pm there was only a few people there, then around 4pm loads of people were coming mainly french fans and a few people came because it was free. Around 17.00 we went in the area where the gig was, it was a small area of the shop only 100 people could get in those who could not get in could still see the gig from the shop. Someone from the shop took the microphone, introduced the band and told us that there would be a signing session afterwards and nobody was really expecting that so people were really happy.

JDB played 5 songs on his own when he arrived we all stood up but we had to sit down while he was playing so everybody could see the gig. He played 5 songs: Ocean Spray, Motorcycle Emptiness, Let Robeson Sing, If You Tolerate and A Design For Life. Afterwards they put a table on stage and here came Nicky and Sean and it was time for people to go to the signing session. Some people who were not in the area of the gig could not go to the signing. I pick an MSP photo which was for fans to take on the table and also had a piece of paper. When I came to see them said hello to Sean and mention that I correspond with (the editor of this zine) Sean was quiet just said he knew (your editor) All 3 signed the photos and two of them signed the piece of paper. Then I said hello to Nicky told him my name and said he knew who I was and said hello to JDB and that was it. After that we knew that JDB was playing some stuff for a local radio in Paris so we decided to go there when we arrived there we were told the session was not for the public but we could stay in the entrance and wait for JDB to come out, after he came out he was obviously in a hurry but we managed to exchange a few words with him. I told him that I went to see both London gigs he asked me which one was the best and I said the second night he thought that the first night was better and then he left, think the band was leaving Paris to go back to London.
