Paintball Glossary
These are some common paintball terms you might need to know when around paintballers, so you know what they are talking about and to make youself sound like you actually know what your talking about.
A
* after market- A part of the gun that did not come with the original equipment, but was bought separately. (So, in other words, not stock)
* agitator- A device in a hopper that spins the paintballs around. This aligns the balls with the feed.
* auto trigger- With pump guns, being able to hold down the trigger while you pump the gun repeatedly.
B
* barrel plug- A safety devise placed into the front of the barrel when the gun is not in play/use. It is meant to stop a paintball if the marker is accidentally fired so no one gets hit by it.
* big game- A large paintball game (with 30 – 250 people on each team). It can last all day/weekend, and normally has somewhat different rules than a regular game. It can sometimes use characters and special costumes, but not to be confused with scenario games.
* blind firing- Simply put, firing at something you cannot see.
* bottle- The bottle that holds the pressurized gas needed for a paintgun to shoot. I just call it a tank though.
* bottle cap- A cap that screws onto the tank valve to keep it from being damaged when it is not being used.
* BPS- It means Balls Per Second; how many balls a paintgun can shoot in one second. Example. 11 BPS it about what my gun can shoot.
* break out- The official start of the game, when people “break out” from their startin position. Also known as running like crazy when the game begins!
* buttplate- A device that attaches to the rear of the air tank, making it a lot more comfortable to shot the gun.
* bunker- A structure set up so that a player can hide behind it. Basically it's anything you can find to hide behind.
C
* chop- When a paintball accidentally breaks while still inside the gun. It creates a nice little mees to clean up too!
* chrono- To have your marker checked with a chronograph.
* chrongraph- Used to measure the velocity (speed) of the ball coming out of the barrel.
* clean- During a paintcheck, this is a call made by a ref stating there has been no ball breakage in the gun.
* Co2- Used in paintball as a pressurized gas for shooting balls.
* count- An announcement to let players on one team know how many people are still alive on both teams.
D
* dead box- Where a player who has been eliminated from a game goes.
* double action- A marker (gun) that cocks and fires with one push of the trigger.
E
* elbow- An angled adapter that attaches a hopper to a paintgun.
F
* feeder- A container that holds paintballs and loads them into the marker. Also known as the hopper.
* fill station- The place where players go to get their tanks filled with pressurized gas (CO2, nitro, or compressed air. Depending on what they use).
* flag station- When playing a game, this is the location of a team’s flag and base camp.
* flanking- A strategy involving moving to the extreme left or right of the opposing team.
G
* ghost ball- A shot that comes out of nowhere and hits a player. Good ol' snipin'!
* gogged- Getting hit in the goggles/mask.
H
* hickey- A paintball shot on the neck that leaves a mark.
* hoser- One who hoses (fires constantly). I like to call it, "GOING ALL OUT!" or "HOLD THE LINE!"
* hosing- Like the hoser (hehehe)It's constant rapid fire. Can be used to pin down an opponent, but often the mark of an inexperienced player since they are terrified of everything.
* hot- A paintgun that is shooting faster than the allowed field limit. (Has a higher velocity setting. This can get you kicked out of a game!)
K
* kill- The successful elimination of an enemy during a game. Example. I got 230 kills today.
L
* leapfrog- A move where two or more players take turns moving forward, each person passing the last. (not actually jumping over thenm though).
* lit up- When someone is shot more times than necessary.
* longballing- Shooting at a target that is out of a paintgun’s range. Or known as a waste of time, and paint, because you'll never hit your target.
P
* paint check- When a ref checks a player for paint splats. It can also be called by the player themself or another player.
* pod- A container that can hold between 10 and 120 paintballs, used to feed balls into a hopper quickly and accurately. You'll see pros wearing a belt that can hold about 6 pods.
* predator- A person who attempts to hunt down other players, regardless of what the actual objective of the game may be. That's what I like to do! ^__^ Hiding in the shadows.
* push- When a team moves forward to gain new ground, pushing the other team back.
R
* rec-ball- Any paintball game that is played for fun, not as a formal competition with money at stake.
* remote- It's connected from the gun to the tank, which is carried on the player's back in a belt made for holding tanks.
S
* semi-auto- A paintgun were one pull of the trigger equals one shot.
* speedball- A fast-paced paintball game played on a small course, usually with many obstacles, and most of the time indoors.
* squeegee- A skinny tool that can go through a marker barrel; used to clean the barrel. Squeegees can be fluffy or plastic. Or to save money just use some paper towels and a pen. ^__^
* staging- Where players go when not in play (either between games or because they’ve been eliminated). Typically, only place where players can take off their masks during play.
* stock- The original parts/component. (As opposed to aftermarket).
* sweet spotting- Shooting from the moment of breakout to eliminate people immediately.
T
* tapeline- The boundary of a playing field.
* tricked- A paintgun that has been modified.
* tunnelvision- When a player looks in only one direction, ignoring all other angles. Also usually the first to be eliminated.
W
* walk-on- A player who shows up at a commercial field without making a prior reservation. A lot of fields have Walk-On Days.
* wiper- A player who cheats by wiping paint off of him/herself after being shot.
* wire- The boundary of a playing field.
* woodball- Any paintball game played in the woods. This is very fun and exciting. You never know what tree someone is going to pop out from behind and shoot you.
Finished! That took awhile, but anyways those are the terms that you will hear a lot, and now you know what people are talking about. Of course there are others, but they are pretty easy and I thought you could firgure them out for yourself ^__^ So go out there and have fun!
