Several members of the SeaNAR section were able to attend the NARAM Launch in Canon City this month. including: Mike Pearson, Abigail Chang, Mark and Russell Kahler, Steve and Eric Bloom. We all flew some competitions, some sport, and had a great time.
Mike:
1/4-A Parachute Duration
Three flights went up, and three times the parachute failed to open. At one point, the RSO questioned whether the "streamer" met the minimum size requirements! At any rate, a total time of 51 seconds made 28th place.
1/2-A Helicopter Duration
After an initial flight with a respectable time, Mike's micro whirl-a-tron deployed shortly after clearing the launch rod, and shredded itself quite nicely. This left him with a total time of 36 seconds, for 22nd place.
A Boost Glider
Mike started with a pair of "non-competition" Edmonds delties. The first flight was "too" good, as the glider flew away, and the timers lost track after only about a minute. The second flight Red Baron'd, for a short (but qualified) time. Total: 82 seconds and 23rd place
B Streamer Duration
What can you say? They go up, they come down. 75 seconds was good enough for 30th place.
C Egg Loft duration
The first flight shredded the parachute, but it found a bush to land on and the egg survived. The second flight shredded another parachute (mine, by the way) and landed hard on the sport range. We were sure it would be scrambled, but after cutting it out of the egg capsule (the impact had jammed it in so hard the capsule deformed), the egg survived. Amazing.
Abby:
1/4-A Parachute Duration
Using a tiny parachute in an Estes X-Ray (the new, mini-motor model), total time of 87 seconds made 23rd place.
1/2-A Helicopter Duration
The first attempt got tossed in the strong winds and failed to right itself in time to rotate. DQ. The second flight did its thing, but broke a rotor on landing. a total time of 31 seconds, for 24nd place.
A Boost Glider
Not a good event for me. The first model nosed back down, barely qualifying as a glide. The second flew the boost for a DQ. Total: 13 seconds and 41st place
B Streamer Duration
What can you say? They go up, they come down. 63 seconds for 31st place. Not bad for a beat-up Alpha with a crepe-paper streamer. None of that high-tech stuff.
C Egg Loft duration
Two respectable flights. The resurrected Eggstravaganza 13 (re-dubbed the Egg Scream Cone) got some good altitude, but could have done with a bigger parachute for longer float times. 80 seconds for 19th place.
D Rocket Glider
OK. so I found the limits of balsa. My 18mm Ecee could have handled a D3, but no, I had to try a D10.  "Hey y'all, watch this!"  Needless to say, it shredded big time, spewing balsa and paper over the range. Someone suggested it ejected the motor, but I protested that statement - it ejected everything but!
Super Sport Scale
A picture of me with my Super Loki Dart. It was in 14th place after static judging, but I don't know how the flights worked into the final score yet. The first flight attempt broke the shock cord and separated. Luckily, the nose had all the weight, and stayed with the parachute. No damage. The second flight went flawlessly, with just a tiny nick in the nose on landing.

For those of you who heard the story about the dart boosting and deploying recovery with an apogee detector, well, that's another story. We got everything ready to load and found that the battery holder was too big for the BT-5. Back to the drawing board for that one!

Steve made this design up himself. It looked kind of cool, but didn't fly.
