"Ok!" Duo pronounced, donning his apron and rubbing his hands together in anticipation. "Now were ready!"
"For?" Wufei looked at the bird carcass in front of him skeptically and with no small amount of trepidation.
"Chicken soup, of course. Sr. Helen always made me chicken soup when I was sick. It's the best cure in the world...and... good even when you're not sick..." Duos gaze became unfocused as he was presumably caught up in a fantasy of luscious orange carrots and plump mouthwatering chunks of chicken floating lazily in a pool of broth.
"You've eaten something other than junk food?" Wufei asked incredulously. Duo blinked. "Well, yes. Occasionally I want something other than Oreos..."
"So how do we make chicken soup?" Wufei inserted quickly, pulling Duo back to the present before he was lost to visions of cookies.
"Oh, it's easy. I have a cook book." Duo pulled out a massive cookbook from a shelf in the kitchen and flipped through the pages until he found the right one. "The recipe's right here." Wufei peered over Duo's shoulder to look at the recipe.
"That seems easy enough. I'll get a pot." As the Chinese pilot rummaged through the cooking-wear to find a pot big enough, Duo started gathering the ingredients and other supplies. He produced celery, carrots, flour, salt, pepper, a cutting board, knives, a large spoon, two large onions, a bowl, a smaller pot, some tongs, a chefs hat, a variety of spices, a rolling pin, the knife sharpener, measuring spoons and cups, a roll of paper towels, a package of noodles, a carton of milk and a roll of duct tape. Wufei looked at the duct tape and then up at Duo as the other pilot set it on the table. Duo shrugged. "You never know."
The teens glanced around the kitchen for anything else that might possibly come in handy, but Duo seemed to have covered all their bases with the last item and nothing now prevented them from preparing the food.
After a few moments of uncomfortable hesitation, Wufei leaned forward and picked up the cookbook. He read the first instructions out loud. Then he directed while Duo carried out orders, filling a large pot with water. On his way to the sink, he turned his cd player back on and sang softly with the music as he worked.
