Quickly she wiped at her eyes with the back of one hand and laughed a little at herself. She dabbed to make sure her mascara hadn�t run while eying Noin�s white dress. �I guess this is goodbye.� �Sally! Don�t be so dire. We�ll be back in ten days.� �You know what I mean.� Noin�s radiance dimmed just a little. For just a second she looked as if she might guess that Sally�s weren�t normal wedding tears. �I�m going to miss you,� she reached out and squeezed her friend�s hand. �Lu! Don�t be silly. You�ll be back in ten days.� They both smiled and chuckled and knew that nothing would be the same once Noin came back from her honeymoon and they lived in different places. Sally finally threw her arms around the other woman and neither cared much about smeared make up. And then Noin, crying and laughing and more beautiful than she had ever been, touched Sally�s cheek in farewell and turned to her husband. Sally cried in earnest then. She had pulled away from the other guests before their goodbye and didn�t worry about anyone seeing the pain she had masked all day. She watched them walk out to the waiting car, Noin�s dark hair in such stark constrast to the silver strands of her companion. He was her only solace. No one else could make Noin so happy, and Sally wouldn�t have parted with the woman she loved for anyone else. |
