In the year 2123, with all but nature destroyed and resources scarce, society has been divided into three kinds of people. There are Alphas, like Larissa, who work half the time and spend the rest in a state of suspended animation called stasis.
There are Betas, like Eric, who alternate work and "sleep" modes with the Alphas. And then there is the Elite, people like Eric's boyhood friend Dominic, who form a privileged aristocracy that rules over the Alphas and Betas.
In the face of increasing pressure from the stasis-jumpers of the Resistance, the Elite insists that the extreme measures are necessary for the survival of the species. Their plan, however, doesn't account for the power of the human heart; Larissa and Eric, as well as sharing a job and a stasis pod, have fallen in love.
Their love is a powerful thing, even through their only contact, other than furtive holographic messages, comes when they trades places in the pod. Their love is so powerful that when Eric learns of an Elite plan to convert millions of Alpha into fuel under the guise of a
great Relocation, he joins the resistance. With the help of Winston, a bookseller who reveals himself as a resistance agent, he frees Larissa from the pod. Can they stop the holocaust that is the Relocation or will the power of the Elite crush the power of love?
