Glinda Costumes

Act One
Galinda's Shiz Uniform
How do you dress the most popular girl in school? Beautifully, of course! Glinda's costumes in Act One reflect a girl more used to pretty parties and private chaffeurs than worrying about actual studies! You won't catch Galinda Upland in last year's fashion!
Galinda's Shiz "uniform" is distinct from all the others in its color, or lack thereof. The choice of white makes the chracter stand out like a beacon onstage. Her first appearance at Shiz has her in a suit that consists of a jacket and skirt showing the same asymmetry present in most of the other costumes in the show. The skirt is knife-pleated like Elphaba's blue dress, and is highest at the left knee, longer on the right. The coat is single-breasted, and she wears spectator shoes in blue and white similar to a 1920-s style; her only concession to Shiz colors!
A few of Susan Hilferty's designs for Glinda, including the Shiz dress from Act One.

The bodice of the underdress is very similar to Elphaba's first act dress, in that it is seamed on the diagonal, with each piped seam ending in a pleat. The collar is asymmetrical as well, the tie higher on the left side.

Stacie Morgain Lewis in Chicago. "I didn't get my way! I think I need to lie down!"
Galinda's Ozdust Ballroom Dress
Galinda's party dress follows the same theme as her school uniform: fun, pretty, and brighter than any other. In the scene at the ballroom, the other chracters wear black and white for the most part, while Galinda's pink makes her the center of attention (as she likes it!)
Spagetti straps highlight a sweetheart neckline and under-bust seam; the torso is seamed like a corset. the skirt descends to eight or nine gathered ruffles, ending just at the knee. The mist interesting detail on the dress is the fabric: a striped pink chiffon that is chevroned on the torso of the bodice. The panels alternate diagonals.
Krusty Cates and Stacie Morgain Lewis: "That may have bneen your secret, Elphaba, but that doesn't makre it true."
An earlier version of this dress, seen on the right, had Galinda wearing blue; the pink fits her early chracter so much better!
Kristen, in an earlier version of the party dress reminiscent of her "Air Dress"
Kristen and Idina: "Do you mind if I cut in?"
Glinda's Emerald City Dress
Glinda's Emerald City dress again makes her the center of attention, putting her in bright yellow surrounded by a sea of green, and setting her up once again as a foil for Elphaba in black. Glinda is about to become the ultimate "Golden Girl" of Oz, and this costume forshadows that!
The bodice is constructed the same as her Ozdust Ballroom dress, with the stripes and chevron pattern more subtle, but still present. The skirt is the real star here: a handkerchief hemline (again reminiscent of the 1920's) shows several overlays of yellow chiffon, the top layer being a printed and embroidered fabric!
