| Family: Sciaenidae Scientific name: Pennahia macrophtalmus (Bleeker) Local name: Gelama cerua, Gelama perak, Gelama pisang Distribution: Shallow coastal waters to about 40m depth Size commonly caught: 13-15cm total length Notes: Body of fish silvery white with blue/grey back. Has a large terminal oblique mouth without any outstanding canine teeth. Lateral line scales reaching to tip of caudal fin. A fairly small species. A very common jewfish caught by bottom trawls in coastal muddy waters. Sold fresh or dried-salted. Cost more when sold dried-salted than fresh. |
