To me, this is a relaxing photo. Locals will know the spot where it was taken...the seagulls are on one of the domes above the old aquarium. Just occasionally, it is possible to forget how important the coast/beach is to this city. But even on a winter afternoon, many locals enjoy the "Breakwater Drive" to be close to the sea. Better still, walk along the breakwater if waves are not spilling over the top, as happens at times.
One of those "will never forget" incidents happened at the breakwater about twelve years ago. With sons at that time about three and eight years old we were walking along the top path. I must have taken my eyes off younger son for a moment, and when I looked behind he had somehow managed to climb on top of the wall and was on hands and knees looking at the waves crashing into the wall many meters below! Though feeling incredible fear for what might occur next, I spoke calmly and walked the few steps towards him, with quiet words something like, "It's all right, don't move at all". Luckily he didn't move. Hard to believe, but quite often people of various ages can be seen walking along the top of the wall.

Beach Thoughts

  • It's best not to walk around the beach areas of town by yourself. Not because of any danger from attackers, but it seems strange without a few friends, children, or a dog. With someone special is just ideal.
  • No matter how hot the weather is, the water is always icy at first. For many locals it may be years since they have actually had a swim at the beach, even though they may be at the beach quite often.
  • Now and then sharks are in Lady Bay (Warrnambool Main Beach). I tend to keep close to the shore.
  • Lifesavers are on duty during the main holiday period.
  • Don't swim anywhere else except the main patrolled area. There are treacherous currents and rips. OK, one exception, usually all right near "Penguin Island". Though keep children away from the Merri River entrance.
