Upload to Geocities

Below are instructions for Uploading a Web site to the free Geocities site. The space now available free to a user is 11MB (the equivalent of 8 floppy discs) so you may wish to add to your site in the future.

Please check the following items on your web site:

• Filenames must not have any spaces in them.
• All filenames must be in lowercase. (Both web pages and image files).
• All target names must be in lowercase.
• All links to Other Pages, Images and Targets must be in lowercase.
• Your Home Page file must be called index.htm
• Links between pages must have the file extension html

If you change anything on your web site to meet the above criteria you will have to check any links that are affected.

On the Internet:

• Go to the site www.geocities.com
• Click on Join Now
• Accept all the default settings and click on Join
• Fill in all the details on the form and click on I Agree
• Go through the special offers (I suggest you answer No for all of them) and click on Submit
• Choose an Area of Interest that closest suits your web site and click on Continue
• Choose a Neighborhood that closest suits your web site and click on Continue
• Select a vacant address (and write it down, remember the address is case sensitive, so write it down exactly as it is shown on the list).
• Click on Move Me In
• Go to the Advanced sign and click on Go
• Click on Go to the Members Area
• Click on File Manager
• Click on Enter the File Manager
• Move to the section titled EZ File Upload
• Select the box – Automatically convert filenames to lowercase
• Select the box - Automatically change ".htm" extensions to ".html"
• Using the Browse button select five of your files and then click on Upload files. Remember you must upload every file you have used, this means:

• Web Pages
• Image Files
• Background Files

• Continue the process until all your files are uploaded
• If you receive any error messages then correct the error and upload the file again.
• At the end of this process your site should be in place at the address you selected, preceded by www.geocities.com/
• i.e. www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/5493 (Remember this address is case sensitive)
• In your E-Mail you will receive a login name and password to get you back to your site in the future to make any changes you want to
• When you go back to Geocities to make changes look for the Members Area and the File Manager. Unfortunately Geocities regularly change the layout of their pages, but the names of the areas stay the same
