| April 1st, Many April fools jokes took place upon other cruisers. Luckily no jokes were played on Seaesta. April 2nd, At Childrens Cay today in the Exuma island chain in the Bahamas. We taught school then rafted with Quixotic dinghy in 2ft of water and played water basketball using pole fishing nets as baskets. Saw two huge stingray upclose, they are very fluid in motion. April 3rd. Went for a tour at the Perry Institute for Marine Science. We were hoping to show a lot of marine biology to the children, but the USA government had not renewed funding this year so only one scientist was on staff researching corals. April 4th. Sailed out of Adler cut and over to Black Point on Great Guana Cay. We enrolled the children in school for tomorow. The town was clean and the people happy. Found a Tamerind tree but the fruit was not ripe. East wind ,seas 3ft. April 5th. We awoke early and brought Evan and Pierce to school for 9:00am. School was/is someways very similar to USA school. However the children wore uniforms and the punishment involved hitting on the side of the head, cane whipping and ear pinching. The principal told off the whole class and they all got the cane for doing so badly on their exams.(except Evan and Pierce). We moved the boats to a less crowded anchorage. Kelby from Quixotic came for a movie sleepover. April 6th. After a large breakfast we motored over to Staniel Cay. We anchored next to Thunderball Cave. The cave is famous for its use in the James Bond movie of the same name. At Staniel Cay the children could swim in the freshwater pool. At Staniel Cay Yacht Club it was hard not to stop and think how wonderful life was. Checking out the net, writing our web page while drinking a Kalik in an open air bar amid tropical flowers and beauty. Who could ask for anything more? April 7th At 08:00hrs the men went out to hunt. The kids from Seaesta and Hispanola all went to Quixotic to draw and do art projects while the mothers went into town to do groceries. We found three grocery shacks. None of the shop owners could add properly. I bought two grapefruit, a cucumber and a bag of cerlery and it came to $14. OWCH.. Later in the evening we had a four course meal at Staniel Cay for $25 a head. After seeing the price of food here the dinner was a great deal. April 8th. Today is Pierce's birthday. At noon and slack tide we donned on our snorkle gear and dinghyed to the cave entrance. Thunderball cave was amazing. It was like swimming in an aquarium. We brought popcorn and crackers to feed the fish. Schools of sargent majors, snapper and angel fish swam inches from our faces. After an hour of swimming the current started to pick up so we headed back to the boat. In the afternoon a picnic party on the beach with the crew of Hispanola and Quixotic. A total of six kids made a pleasant party. After a game of Bocci ball the kids went swimming. I'm sure Pierce will not soon forget his eighth birthday. April 9th. Squalls, stickybuns and belly dancing!! April 10th. Seven months aboard Seaesta! Pierce came down with a fever of 103' April 11th. Pierce slept all day with a fever over 102' the cause of the fever is a mystery. April 12th Pierces fever broke this morning which I am relieved about since finding a doctor out here would be difficult. It rained and stormed all day. April 13 Spent the afternoon on a wind protected beach with the crew of Quixotic. The men set up a campfire and a lean to in case of rain. We set off early to Compass Cay marina. We walked the length of the island to a place called Rachel's Bubblebath. A small cut in the rocks leading to a stream. The ocean swell is forced through the rock opening creating thousand of bubbles to travel downstream. To stand in the bubblebath is like a natural jacuzzi with fish. Later the boys swam with Nurse sharks and walked to a bat cave - which ended up to be a local joke. Someone had hung a baseball bat from the cave ceiling. |
