2005 Fishing Reports Carteret County
King Mackerel Tournament The Sea Drag'n Team is back in action for the 2005 season. We kicked it off with the CCSA KMT this past weekend. It was a great tournament and the weather could not have been better. First mate Brent whom has been out of action since the Nationals in Biloxi was especially excited to hear a reel go off. I am sure he has been reliving that 50 plus we caught that ripped the gears out of one of our Shimano's in Biloxi. I was glad to have the Privateer rerigged with new Opti's and back on the water. I was invited by Capt Andy Hinton (Hot Grits Fishing Team) to fish the second leg of the SKA pro series in Fourchon, La. in June 2004, so I have heard lots of reels go off so far this year. We had a great trip in Fourchon and were able to put a 4l lber and a 43 lber on the board which put Team Hot Grits in 8th Place overall going into Jacksonville this weekend. Good luck to these boys, they are tough fishermen and good guys. Tournament Day The CCSA KMT started out great for the team. We drove down from Wilmington after I got off work on Friday night and met Brent at the Atlantic Beach Condo. Hooked up the boat and were off to the ramp. Slid the boat overboard and were off and running for the 2005 season. We jumped on some nice bait in Core Sound and made a run to a spot on the beach off Core Banks. As soon as we arrived, baits went overboard and the shark attack began. We picked up and ran about 7 miles and put the lines out and were immediately rewarded with a 10 lb Kingfish. It was nice to hear the reel peel off a little, but not the fish we were looking for. The day turned out to be long and hot. The team fished hard catching a 17 lb class fish and alot of Reef Donkeys (sand sharks) but it was nice to have Dad (who will be 74 on Aug 1) on the boat along with my daughter Lauren (who is starting NCSU in the fall). We caught every King on a ribbonfish which was rigged with a new Sea Striker jig head which they just began production of and Phillip Henry graciously hooked us up with. We are excited about how well they performed pulling ribbonfish and look forward to having a Hog inhale one later this year. Congradulations to Capt Joe Winslow for winning the tournament. He is a good fisherman and all around good guy. Hope to see everyone on the water in August for the RSWKMT and then the Sneads Ferry KMT. Tight Lines...Capt. AL |
