Physical Abuse of Elders

What is physical abuse?

There are many types of physical abuse. Assault is one form, involving actions like hitting, pushing, burning, pulling hair, or shaking. Elders can also be physically restrained, or physically forced to do things they do not wish to do, such as forced feeding. In addition, seniors can be abused sexually.

What are some of the signs of physical abuse?

Physical abuse usually leaves some physical evidence on the body of the elder. Any of the following can be possible indicators of physical abuse, especially if the elder has no explanation, or the explanation is inconsistent with the observation: bruises, welts, rope burns or grip marks, swelling, lacerations, internal injuries, difficulty moving around, genital infections and pain, bruising or bleeding in the genital area.
