HISTORICAL
REVIEW
This
place of the Northem coast of the Chilean Pacific Ocean has
a tragic history, strangely obsessive and repeatedly linked
with death, Ioneliness a and oblivion.

- Presence of early precolumbian burial sites (from before
1.000 B.C).

1600. During the Spanish administration is founded the old
Pisagua town. The cemetery is placed at the church courtyard.

1831, Sept. 03. The Government of Perú qualified Pisagua and
Mejillones as harbours to export nitre.

1835. A bigger and safer bay is placed at south, this is the
current Pisagua. A new cemetery is placed at north side of
the town.

1868, August13. A heartquake and tidal wave devasted to south
of Perú. The city was destroyed and half population was dead.

1868. Later, the city was plagued with yellow fever which
ravagued the population.

1870. The government of Perú qualified Pisagua as main harbour.
Census : 2000 inhabitants.

1879. War between Chile and Perú. The Chilean army bombarded
two times the harbour; many deads in the battles.

1879, November 02. The Chilean army assaulted Pisagua. It
is considered the bloodest battle of the war. Appears little
cemeteries for winners and defeateds during the battle.

1891. Chilean civil war. Place of battles In two times (january
23 and February 06).

1903, April 25. The town was destroyed by fire

1905, April 17. A new fire destroyed the town.

1905. Outbreak of the bubonic plague. Survivors run away from
Pisagua.

1913. Outbreak of the bubonic plage again. Survivors run away
from Pisagua.

1914. The first world war caused the beggining of economic
decline of the harbour.

1938. A new fire destroyed the town.

1947. Pisagua was a concentration camp for politic prisioners,
and place of deportation and elimination of dozens of homosexuals
under the government of Gabriel Gonzalez Videla.

1956. Government of Carlos Ibañez del Campo. Pisagua was a
concentration camp for politic prisioners again.

1973. After September 11. Under the regime of General Augusto
Pinochet, Pisagua was a concentration camp for politic prisioners
again.

1990. The final episode is the finding in June 02 of a common
grave for 21 prisioners executed by shooting between September
11 of 1973 and February 1974, under the government of general
Augusto Pinochet.
