MAN TANN: A REAL CHALLENGE.
One day, when I was driving through the small village of Lake Mathews, CA, I saw a feed store and decided to go inside to drop off some buisness card.
I was in the process of moving to a small horse propery I'd just bought, and had new cards printed for my horse breaking business. The lady behind the counter asked if I would like to work with her arab filly. She had won her in a raffle or something. Her name was 'Bewitched'- very appropriate too! As it turns out, I did work with her a little, as well as another mare the lady had, but I never really felt comfortable working for her. I was, however, grateful for the contacts she introduced to me. One of which was a retired
sheriff named Bob Silverman. I went to meet Bob and his wife Gail, one weekend, do discuss their 'problem child' Man Tann. He was a four year old Russian Arabian, chestnut gelding, who'd had the 'royal treatment' with at least two other trainers, one of which I knew personally. Karen (her last name escapes me) and I had crossed paths a year or so earlier. She was more of a show rider who was also doing a little breaking on the side to help make ends meet. I'd seen her ride at a show in Norco and was very impressed. However, breaking and working with problem horses, takes a completely different mental approach, in my opinion, and from the state Man Tann was in when I first met him, it was clear, Karen didn't have it. ...............
