| The Epliouge Robert Edward Lee In august he asks to resign from command. His request is not accepted. He never again tried an assault like Picket�s charge again. He asks Congress for a pardon. It is not accepted. He dies of heart disease in 1870. He was the most popular American general ever. James Longstreet That winter he asks to resign, since he believes the south can no longer win the war. He was wounded severely in the wilderness in 1864, but still is Lee�s most dependable general. After the war he makes two great mistakes. First, he becomes a republican and joins with his old friend from West point, Uylsses S. Grant in rebuilding the south. For this he is referred to in southern newspapers as �the most hated man in the south.� Second, it becomes apparent that the war was lost at Gettysburg. Longstreet gives his opinion that the battle was lost by Robert E. Lee. This happens after Lee�s death, when Lee had became the most popular dead man in the south. For this, he is not invited to the reunion of the army of Northern Virginia, but comes anyway. His theories of defensive warfare are way ahead of his time. He dies in 1904, at the age of 83. Ambrose Powell Hill Hill never got placed in the high richmond society he loved. He is killed by a sniper�s bullet at the battle of five forks 7 days before the end of the war. John Bell Hood He has an arm amputated at Gettysburg, and is later transferred to head the southern army of tennessee. He is defeated by Sherman in Atlanta. Issac Trimble He gets an amputated leg, and is left behind for the enemy to capture. He survives the war. Johnston Pettigrew He survives gettysburg with a minor wound. He is shot to death 10 days later. George Pickett His division is virtually destroyed. No field officer is unhurt. Of his thirteen colonels, 7 killed, and six were wounded. Harrison the spy He survives the war and vanishes from Longstreet�s records. Years later, one of Longstreet�s aides, Moxley Sorrel goes to see a play. One of the actors looks very familiiar. After the play he steps backstage and has a long conversation with Harrison. Nothing else of Harrison is known. John Buford He never gets the credit for his work at gettysburg. He may have saved the battle, if not the war. He is weakened by wounds, and in december of that year, gets pnemoniua and dies from it. Winfield Scott Hancock He survives the wound at gettysburg. After the war it is discovered that his second corps captured more soldiers, more enemy flags, and more weapons then the entire rest of the Army of the Patomac. He is an extremely popuular man allhis life. In 1880, he runs for president. He loses. The pacake Lothario Armistead sent to Mrs. Hancock was his own personal bible. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain In august he is given a brigade. Shortly after, he is mortally wounded shot through both hips. But he returns to become one of the most remarkable men in american history. He is wounded six times. He is given four medals of honor for bravery. Eventually he works his way up to brigader general, then Major General. He is the officer Grant chose to receive the southern surrender. He shocks the world by ordering his men to salute the defeated south. In Maine, he is elected governor three times by the largest majority ever. In 1876, he is elected president of bowdion university. He recieves a medal from France for international teaching methods. He dies of his wounds in 1914, at the age of eighty three. |
