The Fundamental Need: Religion Religion was fundamental to the Egyptians. Just like every other form of human life, (well, except for cavemen), they felt the need to know how they were created and why. So, they imagined a tale of a great g_d Ra who was the creator of beings. The tale went whatever he saw or said, came into being. They also believed that, there were g_ds for almost everything imaginable. The ancient Egyptians were unable to deal that when you die, you might not have any place to go, so they made up a fantasy to us, reality to them. They believed that when you die, you would go to a paradise for three thousand years. But first, you would pass through a gate with seven snakes hissing at you. If your were brave enough to continue, you swore in front of the g_ds that you had done no evil. Then, your heart would be weighed against the feather of truth. If it was lighter than that feather, you could join the paradise. They also imagined tales of the evil g_d Seth killing his brother Osiris. Then, Osiriss son, Horus avenged his father by then killing Set or Seth. They thought that the priests should have their own towers full of grain so that they would offer it to the g_ds. However, the priests ate this food unknowing to the public and royal family. |
