What is Social Democracy?

Social Democracy is a system of government that is based on the rule of law and the defence and promotion of human rights. A democratic society is not just about how people elect their leaders and how they are governed by the rule of law.

A truly democratic society also cares about how people live: what they eat, how they find work and what happens to them when they retire, what property they own, whether the government can own property on their behalf and how freely they associate with each other.

These are economic , social, cultural and ideological issues that democracy must address if it is a system of government that will make people live happier on this earth. The particular brand of democracy that pays specific attention to these socio-economic issues and address them in terms of equity and social justice is called a Social Democracy.

There are systems of government that call themselves "democracies" but they address issues in favour of the rich and politically powerful. Such are termed democracies for the few.

Given our history and where we are today, the social, cultural, ethnic, environmental and political problems that we face today, Social Democracy is what will serve Kenya best.
