SDP recognises that KENYA is a:
Wounded Nation, deeply wounded by many years of authoritarian rule, corrupt leadership and ethnic mistrust deliberately created by the KANU regime so as to maintain power;
Poverty Stricken Nation where 13 million of our people live below the poverty line and 10% of our population control over 50% of our wealth;
A Sick Nation , morally (those in power) and physically (the ordinary citizens). Preventable diseases like cholera and typhoid and diarrhoea kill us because we lack clean access to health and sanitation services;
A Miseducated Nation with little access to basic education. Where available, the education system has failed to inculcate a sense of nationhood and instead promotes bigotry, sexism and ethnic chauvinism; A Violent Nation of state sponsored ethnic clashes. Social deprivation and injustice has led to "mob justice" and lynching when the public apprehends a suspected criminal. The police have long accepted the "shoot to kill" approach as a normal method of apprehending suspected criminals even when the latter are not armed e.g. street children. At Kenya's present state of development, economic growth and social welfare are two sides of the same coin. SDP Kenya promises a new beginning Mwanzo Mpya to open the frontiers of opportunities for all Kenyans in government, work place, public sector, agriculture, schools, industry, entertainment, tourism, scholarship and travel abroad. SDP government will undertake comprehensive constitutional reform so as to establish a sound framework that will stand the test of time for democratic governance in Kenya. Such a democratic constitution must be based first and foremost on the principle that every Kenyan matters. As a citizen, every Kenyan, including
Kenyans Abroad must have the inalienable right and opportunity to participate in the process of government and to choose and control their governors having been granted all basic freedoms. This is the essence of political democracy. But such democracy makes no sense to a hungry person or one who is totally destitute. Hence as a citizen every Kenyan ought to have an acceptable standard of living with regard to good food, good health, shelter, clothing, education, work, security and human rights. This is what SDP calls basic human needs, the essence of Social Democracy
