Education

Following the war, Peter's first objective was to gain a good education.  While in the military he had been offered a commission, but had refused it because of his inability to read and write.  Not being too proud to go to school with children, he attended private classes of John McGraw, learned quickly, and within three years was reading the classics.

He remained an avid reader and accumulated his own extensive library.  McGraw, who weighed 195 pounds, tells of another of Peter's feats of strength, in which Peter could "seat him on the palm of one hand and lift him to the ceiling without effort."
