Dear Friend, whose hand was ever raised to bless,
Whose ear was ever open to distress,
Whose heart was ever touched by others' grief,
We sent aloft our prayer, with yours, tonight:
That God will make your heavy burden light,
That His reviving grace your soul sustain,
Whose life was spent in soothing others' pain.
We pray His angels to surround your bed
And help you to remember what He said:
Tho thro' the vale of death your feet may stray,
My rod and staff will comfort all the way".
And when our earthly troubles all are over
And our worn feet shall tread the farther shore,
May we, whose lives have touched in kindly ways
Be friends and neighbours, as in other days,
And learn, thro' endless cycles, soon to come,
To understand the way He led us home.
