Here I sit reminiscing about the days when fashion design was only a dream and a hobby for me.
Now that its finally becoming a reality. . . I can only sit and visualize the future. There are stars in my eyes and Ive made my wish.
When I was five years old, I was a contestant in the first "Miniature Miss" Beauty Pageant in Maryland. I think that must have been my introduction into the fashion world. I began designing clothes at a young age, whether it was altering night gowns to make them into play jumpsuits or making sure my Barbie dolls were the best dressed little people in the neighborhood. I learned the basics of sewing by using a machine in middle school. Before then, it was all por la mano (by hand).
In 1998, I was out of conventional bill paying work and decided to make a backless shirt out of the same left over material that I reupholstered my dining room chairs with. I began to envision items that were not sold in the stores that I just HAD TO HAVE, and from there, a hand sewn skirt emerged from out of a thrift store curtain. I figured that if I bought a sewing machine, I could make these items quicker; but the sickness spread. I had to sew more, design, invent new creative ways to dress, and the sewing fever grew inside of me and helped me to develop into a self-taught fashion designer.
When I began wearing my designs, I was constantly approached by both men and women who asked about either the brand label and / or designer of the garment. When I told them I had designed the outfit, they encouraged me to work towards distributing my fashion line in department stores.
In 1997, I graduated from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. on an Army Scholarship. The following day, I was commissioned, also, as a 2LT by Tulane University, New Orleans, LA. Today, I am a Captain in the United States Army. I am a paratrooper and a linguist. I have travelled to many countries since I was 16 years old, when I was a participant in the four-week student exchange Sister Cities program between Columbia, MD and Tres Cantos, Spain. On two separate occasions while this business was still in its infantile stage but on the rise, I answered the call to the service of my country and left it behind. In 2001, I volunteered to serve in Bosnia. And, after 9-11, I was called up again to serve in Afghanistan.
Nevertheless, through it all that sewing fire stayed lit in my soul and I had my parents ship my sewing machine over to me. Upon returning from the battlefield, the need to share my passion for fashion designs still burned and now I am back to bring you Bouzhi by S.B. Dowell, because Ive got it and now Im going to show you how to use it. See our job opportunities posted *** here.*** I invite you to hop onboard!
