| As we begin this season of Advent, we are reminded by the Spirit, through the prophet Jeremiah, that God ahs not forgotten his promises to us. We celebrate in this season, a joyful anticipation of Christ's promise to return in glory and we prepare to commemorate his birth. We are called to look deeper into ourselves though. This cannot be an Advent which is limited to lighting candles and setting up our Christmas decorations. The WORD dwells among us! This is the Word through which all of creation was made and remains in existence. This is the true presences of our living, loving God. This is not simply an event that took place 2,000 years ago. The Word that dwells among us is an on-going mystery, an eternal promise which is beyond time. The same Jesus who was born into time, is still born, still is dwelling among us. He cries out to us in the Scriptures. He tells the story of the love that God has for us. He feeds us and takes away all that divides humanity in the Eucharist. He challenges us to see him, to know the presence of God who is present in our brothers and sisters. His message is not one to be remembered once a year during Advent. It is to be lived constantly throughout the year. Answering the call of the Lord Jeus can be frustrating and is not without its challenges. We are bound to sin, to fail and to fall in our attempts to walk with the Lord. But in the Incarnation - the Word living among us - we have a promise that our God is with us through it all. When it seemed that we were lost in our sin and selfishness, God did not abandon or destroy us. Our Loving Father sent the Son to be one of us. He lives with us. He died for us. He is risen so that we too can one day join him in his resurrection. This is our faith. This is what we celebrate and prepare for joyfully this Advent season and each day of our lives. We have been called to live lives that demonstrate the presence of the Word, Jesus Christ, who lives and dwells with us to this day. This Advent, may we continue to make progress toward deepening our relationship with our God and each other so that we may answer the call to "make ready the way of the Lord!" Peace, Shaun Lowery |
