Happy New Year to all my fellow Dog Handlers. Just wanted to drop a line
since it has been sometime since I last did so. Larry has done a really great
job with the site and each time I am able to contact an old friend I think
how lucky we are to have the association. I enjoyed the last reunion and
am looking forward to the next. I enjoy hearing from "Ole" friends so please
drop me a line, however for the next two weeks I'll be a little slow to answser
I have to do a two week AT at Ft.Lewis, WA so I'll be out of pocket. You'd
think after 30 years I'd have had enough! Well, it's still fun, but the Army
changed a lot. In any case good luck in the New Year!

Hi,im looking for some info for my dad. He is looking for info on
a dog named TIP, he was a Shepard/Collie mix. his father ,my Grandfather
H.G. "RED" Kessler ,gave the dog to a gentleman in Kent,Iowa (Fall '65) who
in turn didnt like the dog, at the request of my father the dog was given
to the AF for sentry guard training but was later transfered to the Army.
The Dog was sent to Fort Benning in Feb.1966..and was shipped out to Vietnam
around Sept-Oct 66. He found an old newspaper article from the Des Moines
Register about the dog and how he had 3 handlers and brought back all three
without a mark. The last handlers name was Thomas Richie (could be
Ritchey,Ritchie). In 72 the dog would have been 7y/o. My father was /is very
proud of this dog and was looking to find out how the dog protected his
handlers, and what became of the dog after the war.Any info would be greatly
appreciated by my father. Please Email. Thank you and God Bless.

It is a great feeling to read the messages left by other puppy pushers.
I have made the connection with Mike Stoltz and his family, and enjoyed bringing
back memories we both shared. I spent the majority of my time in Vinh Long
and would be interested in contacting anyone who spent time there during
70/71. My dog was Sergeant 25X1.

I was fortunate enough to have found this site just recently while
surfing for some 'Nam info on the Net . I have joined the Alumni and am very
proud to be a part of it and our efforts in country . Also , I would like
to commend Larry Majeski for his committment of time , finances and hard
work to this site and putting us all back together . I trained in Okinawa
January / February of '70 . Remember drinking Sake at Christmas '69 . I am
the red-head ( most of which is gone now ) that was turned on by my dog while
training early in the class . I am seeking to find anyone who might have
a pic of me and my dog ( Kai ) . I left SD school and ended up in the 595th
. I would like to hear from anyone , Johnny McCorkle , Skopow , Cooper .
The years have erased many of the names . Good luck everyone !

Glad to see this site! You have me, Ray Cloney and Jim Courson listed
as members of the 981st MP Battalion, but we were all in the 595th. Now that
I have the email address of this site, I will visit it often to keep up with
some old friends. I was looking for another friend named Mike Clark from
the 595th who I believe was from the Kentucky or Tennessee area. I would
like to hear from Ray Cloney, too, a friend from West Virginia. It's been
a long time. In fact, it was 29 years ago (Feb. 1970) that the 595th was
started and the first dog handlers left Okinawa for Vietnam. It would be
good to hear from some of the guys. Thanks for keeping up this website! Bob

At 10:00pm while channel surfing I found/watched an Old Army Information Film being showed on a local Ind. TV Station. WBSV, out of Sarasota Fl. It was an older film as the handlers were still wearing white name tags, the film was about Sentry, Scout, and Tracker Dogs and was filmed in Ga. I don't know if any one has seen this film, but you could have been in it. It wasn't a bad film for Army stanards.

This is an honor to send out a request for help to a SUPER group of guys. I was not a handler or even in Nam. but I am a best friend to one of your handlers. His name is Joe Scharett he was in the 212 65-66 his dog was "CANDY" . He is going to retire from Federal service this year. Iwould like for anyone who has any info on Joe to send me it if you would please. What I am particularly intrested in is any info on an event in which Joe saved the Govt much money and several lives. Joe at one point had paperwork on this event but he threw it out. I am rying to plan something special for his retirement later this year. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and concern for all your fellow dog handlers. Sorry this is so long but I had to get this out.

This is an update on the last message that I left here. I am not only looking for official information on war dogs (for a project/term paper), I am also looking for personal recollections from handlers, or members of a unit that had a sentry or scout team of which they have fond or striking memories. Please, send stories by e-mail, put them on a cassette and mail them to me - it doesn't matter. Pictures are also welcome. Just please let me know about the dogs that you have special memories of. Just found out about this organization, and it sounds great. I was in-country with the 212th MPs, but was detached to Phu Loi. This was 1971-72.
If any one remembers the detachment number, I'd be grateful for a heads-up.
Also, I've been looking for a couple of buddies from that time and place, notably one E-4 Bill Hurley(from Boston, MA), and one E-4 Ed Bough (Maine).
Anything on either of these jokers' whereabouts would be appreciated
And sign me up, quick...we ain't gettin' any younger!

I'm trying to locate Charles E. Spaulding (Gene) who I believe served with the 212th MP Company in '66/'67. His last known Vietnam posting was in Bien Hoa RVN. When he rotated out of Vietnam his first posting was at Edwards AFB in California. His dog's name was Cim or Cimarron.
I donated the dog to the Army when I was 5 years old.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

DEDICATED TO MY HUSBAND CHARLES WATTS
SENTRY DOG HANDLER 1965-66
BEAUTY
When I got to Lackland Air force Base Beauty was assigned to me.
I did not know at the time how special the bond between us would be.
Beauty was a sentry dog, a German Shepherd, tan and a lot of black.
When we were in VIet Nam she was always with me and helped watch my back.
Beauty and I would walk and guard the air strips at night.
We knew the enemy was out there and just out of sight.
She loved to sneak up on me and pull at my shirt, we would roll on the ground and play.
But when I put on her leather collar she knew that we had to work the rest of the day.
I taught her how to hunt for a rabbit.
You know she really did get good at it!
One day she chased a rabbit and it went under a gate.
But when Beauty saw the gate it was much too late!
She was going so fast, she tried to stop and could only slide.
She hit the gate and fell back, she shook her head from side to side!
Beauty started having back pain and was hurting so bad.
I wanted to take her home with me and they said I could not and it really made me mad!
They said that because she was trained to kill and attack.
None of the handlers could take their dogs back.
I remember the day like it was yesterday it was the Vet, Beauty, and Me.
He gave her a shot, I held Beauty and told her I loved her, she just looked up at me.
She looked at me one last time, then closed her eyes and then she died.
She was not just a dog, she was a friend I had lost. I just stood there and cried.
Becca's Lil Beauty was her registered name.
I'm here to tell you she was quite a dame!
If I ever get another German Shepherd I know it will not be the same.
But I do know that I will be very proud to give her that name!

Larry, words cannot express my appreciation to you and Joy-Lynn for all the work you have done over the past years to bring all of us puppy pushers back together after so many years. Over the years so much of what we remembered about Viet Nam were the negative memories. But now that we have reunited with our friends so many good memories have come pouring out.
May you and Joy-Lynn enjoy your forth coming retirement. Whenever you roll down I-75 in that big new class A be sure to stop off and see me.
To my fellow dog handlers it was great to renew so many old friendship and was as great to make new friendships. I hope everyone had a safe journey back from St. Louis and we will see you again in two years. John

We need some help though. If you would like to help please contact me at the given email address. We would love to have stories, pictures, or just anything that would help. I recently moved my websites and email address to a new ISP and wanted to
get the info out quickly. Below is the new URL for my websites, which
includes our 595th Sentry Dog site. I would still like to hear from
more handlers and anyone from the 595th. Come visit our site, look at some
photos and read a few tales. It's fun to browse from time to time.

I am doing research for a photography book on War Dogs throughout history and I would be grateful to anyone who had picures of themselves and their dogs in Viet Nam: portraits, on patrol or downtime, color or black and white. You can send attached jpg or tif files to the email address above. Thank-you for any help or assitance you can give me. Sincerely, Sarah Leen Open Books, LLC
