In 1985, "Hillbilly Jim" was one of the most popular stars of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). His actual wrestling abilities were limited, but so were those of most of the organization's bigger names, like Hulk Hogan and Junkyard Dog. He was given a major spot in the limelight, and it's very easy to see why: few men of that period had his warmth and appeal, plus he was huge and powerful. Nay, VERY powerful.

The WWF introduced Jim over a series of weeks as a wrestling fan in the audience who eventually saved Hulk Hogan from a vicious attack. As the story goes, Hogan was so grateful that this burly mountain man aided him, he decided take him under his wing, to train him as a professional wrestler. Hulk even gave Jim a pair of black patent leather boots to perform in. This association with Hogan -- the champion, and most popular wrestler in the world -- made Hillbilly Jim a household name, and a major figure in the sport. To this day the name "Hillbilly Jim" stands as an icon of modern wrestling, known to even non-wrestling fans.
