Submarine warfare during the Spanish Civil War was not as decisive as would be during WWII. Nevertheless, the Spanish Submarine Navy and other foreign submarines, mainly Italian and German, were able to participate and have their influence felt.

At the beginning of the war, the Spanish Navy possessed 12 submarines, 6 of the B series and 6 of the C series, which were under the Republican government's control. The nationalists side, lacking these boats, incorporated on the 20th of April, 1937 the Italian submarines Archimede (General Mola) and Torricelli (General Sanjurjo), completing a total of 14 submarines belonging to the Spanish Navy, both on the Republican and Nationalist sides.

The Italian Navy contributed to the nationalist cause by means of the participation of several surface units and 58 submarines, carrying out patrol and merchant traffic interception missions in the Mediaterranean Sea, the Aegean Sea, the Sicily Straights and North of Africa. Many of these boats took part in combats and in Spanish coastal target gunning.

The Kriegsmarine also dispatched several of the most modern surface warships and not less than 9 submarines to Spanish waters.

Little is known about submarines of other nations and, despite the speculation about the presence of soviet submarines in Spanish waters, this has never been confirmed.
