WARRIORS RUN RIOT
Warriors baseballers continued their run of successes over the weekend with wins to both the Saturday Major League side and the Sunday Minor League side.
The third grade Major League team continues to dominate in this grade with a convincing 13 runs to 8 win over the Kiama Braves team at Gainsborough Field.
Starting pitcher Matt Green had a perfect start to his game when he struck out the first two Braves batters. He tired badly in the second innings allowing 5 runs to be scored. Ricky Clark came on in relief and without any more runs being scored he shut the Braves batters out. Ricky pitched until the fourth innings allowing the Braves batters to score 3 runs off his pitching when Mick Talty relieved him on the mound for the fifth and last innings. In true Talty style Mick struck out one batter while a double play ended the innings with 8 runs on the board for the Braves.
The Warriors batters had the Braves on the back foot at the top of the second innings when a string of hits and a Braves error saw seven Warriors players cross home plate.
The Warriors then showed why they are contenders in this grade when at the top of the fifth innings they let loose with the bat when Matt Green’s single to centrefield inspired the Warriors batters to follow suit. Doubles to Dale Chudleigh, Adam Williams, Ricky Clark and Mick Talty help five Warriors runners cross the plate to give them a 5 run lead and take out the game.
The Warriors Sunday Minor League side also continued their winning ways to totally dominate the Braves Minor League side with a convincing 15 runs to 7 victory.
Veteran pitcher Terry Williams allowed the Braves batters only four scoring opportunities in five controlled innings on the mound. Though he has lost a little speed on his pitches, his deception with his curves and changeups continue to baffle the opposition as they continually miss hit the ball into the waiting gloves of the infield and outfield. Terry was relieved in the last innings by Andy Piper who had two Braves batters out with only four pitches thrown. Uncharacteristic fielding errors by the infield allowed the Braves to add three unearned runs to their score before another brilliant catch to outfielder Kevin Gamble ended the game and the Braves chances.
The Warriors batters continue to show great form with the bat with the team batting average at .442%. This aggression with the bat is allowing the team to average just over 13 runs per game and is putting the opposing teams under great pressure as they try to chase down the warriors runs.
Sunday’s game saw the team record sixteen safe hits in their six innings of batting. Leading the way with three hits each were Dave Daley and Mick St John. Two hits each to Peter Jones, Geoff Piper, Mick Texiera and Kevin Gamble were followed by singles to Andy Morgan and Andy Piper.
