| Our meeting on July
21st 2005 will be held at the Watts House and we will not be holding a business
meeting this month. We will be having an ice cream party and also selling
quartermaster things at half price. There will not be any speaker this month
but be prepared for some outstanding speakers in the upcoming months. Please
bring any artifacts that you have that relate to the WBTS and we'll have
a show and tell to let our members be familiar with that era. Our annual cookout at Robert Roper’s will be held on September 17, 2005, a Saturday. | Here's a version of the Pledge of
Allegiance given to me by our friend Le Roy Caudell when we were enjoying
the fish fry at the Orr's Rifles camp a few months ago: I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America and to the republic which it founded, one union of sovereign states, blessed by God, and whose Bill of Rights protects the liberties of every citizen. |
| I was at a friend's house recently.
His family branches both ways into the past, with both Confederate and Yankee
ancestors. He showed me his Confederate ancestor's sword. One of his Yankee
ancestors kept journals during and after the war. He handed me one of the
journals to look through, and I saw that it started in the year 1863 and
that his ancestor was in the Navy and was stationed on the Mississippi river.
Sure enough, I flipped forward to July and read his description of the fall
of Vicksburg and a few days later (news traveled slowly in those days) the
disaster at Gettysburg. |
