Guardian Committee Report

DAVID TILLMAN

One hundred forty years ago, our ancestors found themselves embroiled in a devastating war that took the lives of many of their comrades, made cripples of many, and changed the lives of all involved. These men made incredible sacrifices for the principles they believed in, both during and after the conflict. The Southern soldier has been remembered for his bravery, tenacity, and honor for several generations now, and we must ensure that his history continues to be preserved.

These men are all gone from our physical world and can no longer fight any battles---but there are many to be fought still. The enemies are no longer Yankee soldiers invading Dixie with cannon and rifles at the ready.  Our modern enemies work slowly and purposefully to destroy our heritage and erase the memory of those whom we cherish. We must step in and do the fighting this time, the “Old Boys” can’t.

Our foes are Time, Weather, Vandals, Political Correctness, and Misinformed Individuals. Together, they are quite an adversary, but defeatable.  We can make a difference and outflank them if we use the correct strategy. The ammunition has been supplied to us by none other than Uncle Sam, and must be used before the armory closes. I’m not talking violence here, but simply good, honorable labor and love.

Currently, many of the grave markers for Confederate soldiers in Laurens county are in sad condition. Many are missing completely; others broken and unreadable from wear and vandalism. The Crosses of Honor are missing from a large portion of them, stolen. This is an unacceptable situation. We cannot allow our men to be forgotten when we have the resources to preserve their memory!      Thanks to the dedication of our compatriot, Cliff McKinney, we have on hand a number of government markers that are awaiting installation throughout Laurens county. These markers denote our men as Confederate soldiers.

This is where you come in. I have planned a workday for Saturday, the 23rd of August to set out some of these stones. We will meet at Verdin’s Farm and Garden on Highway 221, Laurens, at 9:00A.M. Bring gloves, shovels, posthole diggers, or whatever tools you feel might be needed for this purpose. We always have a good time and enjoy the camaraderie of our fellow compatriots. You just might learn some local history and have the opportunity to place a marker on one of your own ancestors.

Please mark your calendars and make the effort to assist us with this work. I’m sure the men will be looking down on us from Heaven with a smile, (and don’t you know it drives our enemies nuts!)

If you need to contact me about this matter, please call David Tillman at (864) 575-2464. Thanks!!!!!!!!
