People are sometimes convinced that they can substitute their normal working lives for something easier, something more fun and less stressful , while getting quickly rich beyond their wildest dreams. Of course it is tempting to try find an easy way out of the normal work routine. The overwhelming majority of these people are falling victim to old fashioned get rich quick schemes. The scheme is called multi level marketing. They are of course never referred to as get rich quick schemes by the ones who perpetuate these activities. Instead, those who approach with  this strange form of commerce ask, Wouldn't it be nice to earn some extra income? Or eventually say goodbye to your 9-5 job? It's all about what you want and how much time and energy you want to commit. That's the beauty of (insert name of phony business here) it's not a one-size-fits-all business. It's a business you custom build to fit your needs! (teamofdestiny.com) This is just a small taste of the kind of flashy language one can expect to find on the web page of any of over 300 pyramid schemes currently operating in the United States. Expect a lot of slick wording and exclamation points!(mlmyellowpages.com)
For what ever is the reason, there are many numbers of names for what these are. MLM- Multi Level Marketing, Network Marketing or Pyramid schemes. What your position towards these systems determines what you will call them . Those involved will staunchly deny it is a pyramid scheme. Multi level Marketers will simply call it an approach to selling great products in a more personal way. Or, if it serves the purpose to make it sound like a legitimate operation, one may just refer to it as, starting my own business. Most people who take a distanced, objective view will be able to identify them as some sort of rip-off.
Multi-level-marketing works basically like this, instead of selling directly to consumers in the consumer, the manufacturer of a product finds some person to sell the product, who find more people to sell the product who find more to sell, the process is supposed to go on and on  For each level of people below the person selling, the percentage of profits and commission from the products sold in what is called the downline  increases. If one person recruits ten, who recruit ten, who recruit ten, that makes a thousand people under the top person, or Upline. One major problem lies in the fact that in this form of marketing, more emphasis is put on recruits, or increasing the downline, than actually selling the product. Another problem is the number of people willing to join in a local area diminishes rapidly. Also, it seems like the actual selling system is designed to fail. Imagine buying all your house hold products you would normally pay significantly less for at Wal-Mart, costing more, having none of the name brands you are accustomed to. You also have to order through a complicated process on a website you need a secret password to access, getting the password from from your upline. Then,  pay for shipping and wait for the products to arrive. It is hard to imagine a grand mother giving up her pine-sol from the five and dime she has been using for twenty-five years, in favor of this.
The vast majority of people, 70 percent, involved in the marketing never make any actual profit at all. Those who do make any profit, average about 30 dollars a month. (http://www.vandruff.com/mlm.html) The Federal Trade Commission wants to make sure that these facts are known to people who are convinced they are going to retire young because of their dish soap pedaling. (Ftc.gov) Since a very  small number of people who make it towards the top of the pyramid actually make a large amount of money, it is not an illegal pyramid. The chances of gaining any actual wealth from these programs are comparable to winning a large amount of money playing the lottery.
One way the pyramid is constructed, is to sell motivational tapes to those under you that give detailed instruction on how to succeed in their business, how to recruit more people into their downline and how to move up into higher levels in the system. More often than not, after months of investing hundreds, or thousands of dollars,  of their own money in their new own business they find they have basically no chance of achieving their promised goals of retiring in a matter of months. People usually end it all with a closet full of dusty motivational tapes, embarrassed to ever have been involved. You must also purchase an IBO kit. This is a kit containing everything you will need to become an Independent Business Owner. This can cost hundreds of dollars and it is hard for the IBO kit to pay itself off.
The name Amway has become has become synonymous with MLM. Those familiar with the Grand Rapids, Michigan area might be familiar with the names of VanAndel and DeVos, the co-creators of Amway. Friends since childhood, these two entrepreneurs invented the MLM system in the 50s and are now multi-millionaires. After a lengthy investigation (and probably a little palm-greasing by the multi-billion-dollar company), the Federal Trade Commission decided that Amway was a legal business. Amway and has been sued countless times for charges ranging from fraud to breach of contract to TORTUOUS INTERFERENCE WITH CURRENT AND PROSPECTIVE BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS. (www.pyramidschemealert.org)  Amway has many interconnected subsidaries, which are all the same company, they just have different names and use the ordering process slightly differently. Team Of Destiny, or TOD seems to be the most outlandish. TOD focuses even more on recruiting people and would appear to cater to the most gullible. TOD comes across as less like a legitimate business and more like free money. It makes it seem like all you have to do join, and enjoy the wealth. The TOD website barely includes any details about how the team makes money, just details about how rich and happy team members are.
A visitor to one of any number of interconnected Amway sites like Team of Destiny or Quixtar sees the same message on any of the home pages. Make Money, Have fun. Isn't that what people mostly want to do in life, at least those who care mostly about money. It is like a dream come true. The sites feature images of beautiful people enjoying lavish lifestyles with sports cars and luxury yachts- all due to their involvement in MLM. The language used suggests that happiness is only achievable through making large amounts of money. Achieve all your goals, have fun, enjoy life, never work hard, be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams, be the person you always wanted to be.
Others maintain that Amway has a Gestapo-like hired thug force that beat up people who have turned on the company or those who spoke out against openly against them and their methods. Some years ago in the Grand Rapids area, a man was writing an in-depth investigative expose on Amway. He claims he was beat up and threatened by some Amway thugs while visiting Chicago. After a large legal battle he was issued a gag order on the case and the book, the work remains unfinished. (mlmblog.typepad.com) Perhaps the author now writing this, runs a risk even taking on this subject. (Probably not).
It is true, if you join Amway, get a very large number of people in your downline (like thousands), have them all sell a large volume of products, sell a lot of motivational tapes and have a tremendous stroke of good luck, one can start to make a small profit  It is possible to achieve all these goals. It takes a complete commitment of time and energy, and a significant monetary investment. It is hardly the promised substitute to a normal nine-to-five job. Just because one has a normal job, doesn't mean they cannot make money and have fun.

Part 2: what this means for Gaylord

Locally, in the Gaylord area, the "Team of Destiny" has been spreading like the plague. First of all, the name ,"Team of Destiny" sounds like a name for people that help Indiana Jones raid the temple of doom. If you do not raise your eyebrow in question when someone asks you to join their "team of destiny" I have some real estate on Venus to sell you. I personally know some of these poor vicitms of brainwashing, I would consider myself friends with some, but they are temporarily experiense a brain lapse. When they emberassingly admit they have not made any money, and they quit, I will still be their friends and I will resist the urge to be an, "I told you so" type of guy.Of course none of my close friends are involved, all my friends know better.
One local "Team mamber" is former Sportsplex director Ryan Sharpe. "Ryan's a good person, but not the right person for this job," board president Ken Ames said. "Ryan is an honest and hardworking person and a good family man. He's just not cut out right now to be in the position of Sportsplex director." (gaylordheraldtimes.com) This quote from the begining of the article on his firing has an underlying question/suggestion. Isn't the article is actually suggesting that people thought
Ryan Sharpe is neither honest or hard working. Sources have given the Bullshit report  reason to believe that this is the case. Sharpe reportedly not only fired a long time sports plex, giving his girlfriend the position, but reputedly refused to work weekends or long days. This is a non-story compared to his attemmpt to make the Sportsplex a TOD(team of destiny) controlled establishment. For example, upon interviewing people like janitors who would make 8.50 an hour under normal circumstances, they were offered 10.50, or more, an hour if they joined the TOD under Sharpe. Now we have newly-hired janitors making more than people who have worked in the same position since the opening of the Sportsplex. Also, the supplies that are used in the operation of the sports plex, like liquid soap, were then purchased through Sharpes TOD, giving him a personal check from a percentage of sales. Aren't the supplies at a discounted price that way? No, the supplies actually cost more, and allegedly inappropiate products were substituted to increase his sales.
This is all with the already budget-crunched county's dollars- you're dollars.
These are major allegations- some legal questions come into mind here. Why has no one acted on these, no Gaylord Herald Times story, no charges brought up against Sharpe. -Golf buddies watching out for each other- thats what its all about. -I don't play golf.
After his emberassing attempt as Head hockey coach, and boxing promoter, the Sportsplex board of directors (comprised of experts like der chocolat-meister Bruce) voted unanimously  to fire Sharpe.
What a relief.

I once heard Dave Chandler, famous for his drunken antics, literally screaming at a party that " One year from now, we'll be on the beach in Mexico, drinking margaritas and banging Asian bitches, rich as H***. Well be retired and you're still goiing to be working like a loser!!!" This was about two and a half years ago. He still drives a Geo Metro. Still not rich. Sorry Dave. Recently when asked how much he made on his last TOD check, Dave responded, "uh, last month I made 30 bucks." The whole family is involved, all in each others downline. You can find "work from home, make money, have fun" pamphlets with the Chandler name in truck stops from Gaylord to Detroit and beyond. Good Luck. Sorry to bash an otherwise seemingly friendly people, but that is the risk you take when you get involved with TOD and scream obscenities at people parties, when they don't join.

Personally I think the Multi-level-marketing-idea is a slap in the face of hard-working Americans.    Take youre no-name dish soap and shove it!

Street Gangs Invade The Alpine Village!
Many local people remember the days when Gaylord was a battlefield for the "Bloods" and The "Crypts". These street gangs ran the city and threatened the lives of Otsego County residents, no such horror was seen since the St. Valentines Day Massacre. Actually none of it happened, but it was sensationalized almost to this degree by the Herald Times and the Gaylord Community School system, spearheaded by none other than Champion of Justice: Hap Wright- the middle school teacher! He was certain that necklaces and clothing that showed the colors of black and red were the "Bloods", blue and black were the 'Crypts"(or Crypt-Keepers) and black and yellow were- the "killa-beez?" There was an actual "Gang Task Force" that was formed by concerned people in the area. What an easy job- organizing efforts against street gangs in Gaylord! Thank goodness Gaylord no longer has to worry about "gang activity" in the middle school, but this is not true in other schools, read on.

Glens to be bought out by Krogers?...First National Bank...Other Rumors and Oddities....

Local rumor has it that Glens Markets, which was sold to Spartan Stores not to long ago by the Catt family, is possibly being converted into a Krogers, a popular southern michigan food store.  Obviously, this rumor is in response to the expected decimation of Glens by competitor Wal-Mart, which opened its 'Super Center'  March 17th.  Other rumors concerning the Glens/Wal-Mart standoff include that if a Glens employee is caught shopping at Wal-Mart, they will be fired, no questions asked......Carters is also subdividing its grocery store, preparing for the impending doom that Wal-Mart will unleash upon the community, attempting to turn its store into a smaller style grocery store.  Construction has already started.  In stranger news a couple of months back we heard that the old Willabies Restaurant (was that place awful) has been bought by "Hooters" - a 'family' restaurant where the waitresses wear tight clothing and short shorts...this author finds this hard to believe...more info when I get it....First National Bank has apparently been bought out by another corporation, as reported in local papers.    I hope this does not result in my free checking being taken away....The Fireside Bar has apparently been bought and is being remodeled?...At least thats what appears to be happening....

**Update** Inside sources indicate that Glen's is not going to be bought by Krogers- Glen's employees are not to be fired if caught shopping at the Walmart Super Center. Glen's has, however, suffered a 30% decrease in sales since the opening of the new Walmart. No changes at Glen's in Gaylord are expected in Gaylord, except for the average price of products in the store has already dropped significantly.

Take that to the bank and cash it.
Passing Wind

Wind Turbine Generators, or WTGs are a modern adaptation of the ancient technology of the windmill. Modern windmills use the wind not for turning a mill or running a pump, but for round-the-clock production of electrical energy. Within the last 30 years we have seen an explosion of the number of wind turbine generators used for power production around the world and in the United States. The state currently gets 70 percent of its power from coal; 20 percent from nuclear plants; 9 percent from natural gas, and only 1 percent from all renewables, including hydroelectric and wind power. (greenpower.org) Northern Michigan has been the issue of controversy lately over the use of wind power. Michigan is the fourteenth most potentially wind-powered state in the nation. The areas along the north and north west coast of the lower peninsula and in Otsego County, the Gaylord area, are ideal for wind power production. The coastlines are in areas where winds off the great lakes are constantly strong. The average elevation above sea level of Otsego County is the highest in the lower peninsula which makes for a strong constant wind speed. The National weather service has a large facility in Otsego County for this reason. (Matheny) There are already successful wind power projects in the areas of Traverse City and Mackinaw City.
The demand for electricity is increasing. Prices are going up and our dependence on coal, natural gas, nuclear energy and nuclear energy is also increasing. President Bush's energy plan, which notes the United States needs 350,000 megawatts of new wind power within the next 20 years. Michigan, which has 20,000 megawatts of capability, needs an additional 12,000 in the next 20 years. (Matheny) Wind is a completely free source of energy after the WTGs pay for their initial start-up costs. Unlike power plants that only produce power during operation hours, wind autonomously produces energy every minute of every day. Wind power is inexhaustible. It is inevitable that in the not so distant future we will need to change from dependence on traditional polluting power sources to clean, renewable resources. The global wind energy potential, even excluding environmentally sensitive areas, is roughly five times current global electricity use. (Canwea) Why not be leaders in Otsego County and take the opportunity we have due to our geographic advantages. We must put the controversy to rest and recognize that wind power is the right choice for Otsego County.
One disadvantage to windmills is the noise. Skeptics believe that there are personal health risks to people the low frequency sound waves given off by the spinning rotor blades. This ranks with the thought that cellular telephones cause brain cancer. Nothing has been proven and there is really no evidence to support the claim that it is true. The noise has simply been a nuscince in the past. The noise comes from the mechanical operation of the gear boxes and from the turbulence from the wind passing through the rotor blades. Modern windmills are much quieter. The blades are much more aerodynamic and many new models are made without gearboxes. (Mitsubishi) "At 250 yards the noise is comparable to a standing next to a refridgerator that is running. You can carry a conversation at the base of a wind turbine generator without difficulty." (Greenpower.org) The County is dotted with literally hundreds of noisy natural gas wells. The wells have loud pump motors that randomly turn on when their service is needed. Many of these are very close to residences and they are much louder than any WTGs would be. Snowmobiling is an activity that extremely noisy that is largely tolerated in the county.
The "ugliness" of the generators is an issue, too. Perception of the WTGs is partially the opinion of the viewer. Lots of people enjoy the way these look, but if a person does not like the way the wind mills next door look, there is a problem. Also one or two windmills may be more pleasing than a wind farm of thirty to forty WTGs. In the County, there is an abundance of mostly uninhabited  areas. It is not a county that is filled with suburbs and neighborhoods. Surly there must a suitable place. Many farmers have expressed enthusiasm about the project. It can preserve farmland by giving farmers an alternative to selling their land to residential developers. Farmers get about two percent of the proceeds from the generators. (beardslee) There are concerns that WTGs contribute to the devaluation of adjacent property. This too, can be addressed with find an isolated enough area. The gas wells are not only noisy but would probably be considered by anyone to be far uglier than any wind turbine generator. These wells are rusted and brown mechanical beasts, often resembling the inside of a junk yard. Some times the gas facilities have several large metal buildings that are a completely unsightly thing to find when on a nice drive or hike in the wilderness. These facilities produce green house gasses and risk ground water contamination. Not just ugly and noisy, but the smell is disgusting. The smell is like rotten eggs and can be smelled within hundreds of yards of the wells. Probably due to the strong economic intrest in the gas wells, they are all tolerated.
WTGs have been thought to be notorious bird killers. County commissioner Jeff Garfield  has spearheaded the resistence to WTGs in Otsego County. "The Sierra Club calls them "cuisinarts of the air," because the air suction caused by the blades pulls birds in, then kills them," Garfield said at a county planning meeting. (Lounsbury) Garfield said he wanted to make sure the "cuisinarts" were not a threat to migratory birds. The county is on a major migratory for Canadian Geese. It is difficult and a little disturbing to imagine the beautiful "V" formed by a group of  Canadian geese turning into a pair parentheses, then commas, until they are only a pair of periods, finally completely deleted from the word processor of the sky. The actual number of birds killed by wind turbine generators is quite minute. The estimated maximum number of birds killed by generators nationwide is about 2.2 million. (Morris) This makes it seem like a lot of birds could be saved without wind power. In perspective, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says that cats kill about 39 million birds in their state, alone. (Sagrillo) Cats are not the only threat to birds. There are other studies on the impacts of jet engines, smoke stacks, bridges, and any number of other human structures and activities that threaten birds on a daily basis. Together, human infrastructure and industrial activities are responsible for one to four million bird deaths per day! (Sagrillo)
Ironic that WTGs are being accused of harming wildlife, when they are supposed to be a environmentally helpful piece of technology. It is true that the generators can be responsible for actually saving the life of birds. A study in Ontario, Canada estimates that the power from coal-fired plants that wind power would replace would reduce pollution so much that 1710 birds per turbine would be saved annually. Take away the 2.2 million birds killed by the rotors, and the balance for wind energy, +1707.8 birds per turbine a year, is not bad. (Morris) There is no evidence that birds are routinely being battered out of the air by rotating wind turbine blades as postulated by some in the popular press. (Sagrillo)
Wind power has been considered a great success in Northern Michigan already. Nine years ago the first was constructed just west of Traverse City. The largest in the United States at the time, the windmill in Leelanau County's Elmwood Township measures 230 feet to the top of a blade. The turbine has averaged about 800,000 for the past six years. (Matheny) "All of the feedback from our customers is that they like it," Said Jim Cooper, marketing manager for the city-owned power company, Light and Power. They have 110 homes and 15 businesses signed on to pay 1.58 cents more per kilowatt hour to support the turbine. "It's an average of about $7.50 a month more," he said. "We have over 30 people on a waiting list, wanting to sign on to the program if anybody drops out." (Matheny)
In Mackinaw City, Two new WTGs have been erected. In their first 4 days of operation they produced enough energy to power 9 homes for a year. This project has received many positive comments from residents and visitors alike. The residents voice their pride in being part of such a project that brings renewable energy to the region. The visitors are impressed with the way they look. Some go so far as to call them kinetic sculptures.
(Mackinawcity.org)
Like Gaylord, the Mackinaw City project had its share of skeptics. It was a similar situation as in Otsego County. People just didn't like the idea for what ever reason; Eyesore, bird blender, noise-maker, each not as bad as thought. Enough people liked the idea of the WTGs, and democracy prevailed. Hopefully Otsego will follow suit and see that there are more than enough good reasons to accept WTGs, than to reject them and get a step closer to using the renewable resources that we have access to.

Drunken Deputy Involved in Altercation with Loaded Gun Wants Job Back...
Gaylord Sheriff Deputy Nicholas Cavanaugh was releaved of duty on the 20th of February for possessing a loaded handgun during an alleged altercation while being intoxicated.  Apparently the officer was parked in a Gladwin business with his lights on around 11:45 pm the night of Feb. 14th (valentines day, I believe) and was grasping a women by the back of her hair when he was approached by a Gladwin City Police officer.  When approached by the officer, deputy Cavanaugh stated he wasn't going to leave the parking lot until she said 'please'.  The Gladwin officer also found a loaded hangun under a jacket in the backseat of the vechicle with a round in the chamber.  Deputy Cavanaugh also submitted to a breath test, where he registered a .17, more than double the legal limit.  Mere mortals are normally subject to a 93 day misdemeanor when caught with a loaded handgun and a BAC of .10 or higher (let alone drunk driving). However, instead of being arrested, the Gladwin officer drove the couple to their hotel room and had Cavanaugh's vechicle towed. Interestingly, Cavanaugh was also involved last year in the fireworks heist along with Deputy breicheisen, who has been relieved of duty as well. Gladwin prosecuter says there is (of course) insufficient evidence to charge Cavanaugh because of the Gladwin officer not performing other field sobriety tests and because the car was parked.  Cavanuagh is currently seeking arbitration with the hopes of getting his job back.

Comment:  This bullshit reporter believes that the streets are now much safer with this man not on duty.  Lets hope he stays off.  Obviously, if you or I were in the same postion we would still be jail for this (these) crime(s).  Have you ever been involved in an altercation while drunk with a loaded pistols in the backseat under a jacket with one in the chamber while pulling the hair of a woman?  What kind of wacko's are becomming police?   And the police wonder why they have a bad reputation in this town.  I respect police officers, and there are a few honest ones (maybe the State Police) in this town that deserve the authority they hold, but its beginning to look like they can't handle the responsibility of their job.  Would you like to be pulled over by this man if he was again allowed to wear a badge?  I think not......
Bagley residents speak now - Letter to the Editor- Gaylord Herald Times

Residents of Bagley Township, the time has come.
If you don't want a $20,000-plus burden added to your property with no added value, along with a $40-per-month sewer bill it is time to do something about it. Bids are now being taken for a $5-million sewage treatment plant that the majority of township residents don't want or need. The original plan was to have Meijer, Lowes and other businesses pay a large part of the $5 million bill. They are not coming. So guess who is going to pay for it. You are. The original plan also called for commitment from these businesses before taking on a $5 million debt. Where is that commitment? Township officials were elected to represent the majority of the residents of Bagley Township, not just the minority business interest. So far it looks like they may cause one business to leave the area. The new owners may relocate. The right thing to do is hook up to Gaylord sewer and water to develop the property. We don't need two sewer treatment facilities in an area this small. This plant only benefits the land developers, contract engineers, and large construction companies not the majority of Bagley residents.
Don Brandt
Bagley Twp.

Mr. Brandt, what a moving letter.
Does this mean that everyone in Bagley township will have to pay $20,000 if the sewer is put in? No it does not. But he makes it sound like it, and so soes the Gaylord Herald Times for printing this sensationalized piece of butt-wipery. Where are his sources? I think this is hear-say. Meijer and Lowes? As far as the BSReport knows, Meijers never had finalized plans to come to town, let alone help pay for the Otsego Lake sewer. Every expert that looks at the ecologically ruined lake, says the first step is a sewer. Property values will go down, with out the sewer, and up, with it. The lake is also a boost to the tourism economy. The area has been working to get the sewer for 30 years. Mr Brant wants to fill our lake with even more sewage and ruin our economy! Thanks anyways!

Ban Cell Phones While Driving in Gaylord-?
Are we flattering ourselves? Is this for real? This is not Manhattan, although traffic is similar at times. We do not need a cell phone ban in Gaylord, surprisingly, according to the online poll- over 50% think there should be. THe herald times is very misleading with the statistic "driver distraction is responsible for 20-30% of auto accidents." (Not cell phones-just distractions) If phones are banned, how will we call for help when the police are shooting off illegal fireworks?
