Colorful reefs no more... Well, there are nice reefs in front of Akumal as well, but oncoming Hurricane Michelle kept us on shore for the better part of the week. Lucky us... this is the Cave Diving capital of the world! Dos Ojos is the name of the game. Probably the most spectacular cavern dive anywhere. Be prepared for the unexpected experience of a lifetime...

The second week of SCUBATREKKERS Dive vacation started with a very rough ferry ride from the island of Cozumel to Playa del Carmen. Mother Nature had something brewing up there. Michelle (the hurricane) was turning the tranquil Caribbean water into a devils hot pot. The modern ferry could not even land in Playa Del Carmen due to crashing waves. Happy to have solid ground under our feet, we rented a, for its size outragously expensive, Nissan Sentra and drove down to Akumal. Here we checked in at our very comfortable apartment, the Sirena Iguana.

After exploring the area with our little rental car we were in desperate need of some Nitrogen. Despite the ocean still being disturbed we wanted to fly past some reefs again. Hey, it's been two days without scuba, what dive holiday is that? Quite frankly... visibility sucked! But the dives were cool anyway because we saw this turtle at close range and I discovered a badly camouflaged Longlure Frogfish. Now how cool is that? Unfortunately on that particular dive Bruno did not bring the camera... damn fool! So that was it for the ocean during week two. But there is a real cookie for adventurous divers close by. And weather does not influence this magical place... the underwater caverns and caves of the Yucatan Peninsula - HIDDEN WORLDS!
Just to get to the entrance of Dos Ojos is an adventure in itself. On an old wacky Jungle Mobile the divers are transported into the jungle. Then there is this very small hole in the ground... this leads to the cavern.

There are no words that can describe this experience. Mario would call it Indiana Jones goes scuba while Sandra described it as "the black hole"-hell. Definately not for someone with claustrophy.
Mario & Bruno really went crazy in there. Many pictures were taken by Bruno but the little flash on his MX10 did not fare well in the darkness of the caves. To really appreciate the beauty of these incredible dives... go and see for yourself!

Next to the great diving we also went to visit the Tulum ruins and enjoyed many great Quesadillas & Superiors in small beach cafes. We snorkeled in Grand Cenote, went shopping in Playa del Carmen and did the "Hang Loose"-Blues on the powedery white beach of Akumal. Our top favorite restaurant in Akumal was the Italian place La Onda... very nice waiter, serving incredible wine with delicous pasta to the music of Manu Chao. Life doesn't get much better than this!

All good things have to come to an end I guess? Two weeks of world class diving, lot's of sunshine (at least in the first week) and plenty of great times... mixed with a great SCUBATREKKERS crew and you'll have yourself a hell of a great vacation! Trust me on that one. Sandra & Bruno dropped off Mario at the Cancun airport for his flight back to cold Switzerland. But also for them the hours in paradise were counted. Before we knew it... we were back in Los Angeles, dreaming of another great diving holiday.
