Dissections in this course will include: lamprey eel, dogfish shark, clam, starfish, and squid for the purpose of comparing various anatomical features of sea and land animals. Students will cultivate and observe microscopic life forms so that all five kingdoms of life will be studied and they will do ecological research projects to study the chemistry of marine biomes: salinity, water quality (pH, total dissolved solids, organic pollutants, conductivity, etc.), nutrients, and dissolved oxygen. Students will be required to write one research paper (which will be a study of various environmental philosophies), at least one research report, and one book report. Participation in the MHSRC Science Fair in March is mandatory. Prerequisites: Algebra 1, Biology 1, Chemistry 1 - no exceptions!! Students must have all of these courses so that they will be prepared to do the complex laboratory and research projects. Textbook: Exploring Creation with Marine Biology by Sherrie Seligson - Apologia Educational Ministries, Inc., 2005 (available August 2005); and Marine Biology Coloring Book by Thomas M. Niesen - Coloring Concepts, Inc. 2nd Edition, 2000, ISBN 0-06-273718-X. GEOMETRY taught by Mark Woodhams at Midlands Home School Resource Center FINAL GRADE: 91.00 Students will study points, lines, and planes as well as two and three dimensional objects in this course. Geometry is mostly reasoning, logic and proofs; therefore, students will begin studying this early in the school year and keep at is throughout the course. Prerequisite: Algebra 1 Textbook: Geometry: Integration, Applications, and Connections by McGraw-Hill, ISBN 0-07-822880-8. COMMUNICATION STUDIES Instructor: Betsy Montgomery at Midlands Home School Resource Center. FINAL GRADE: 91.00 Recommended for tenth-twelfth graders as an academic elective in language arts, the course is one-half credit and will meet on Mondays during the spring semester. This course seeks to introduce high school students to the fundamentals of interpersonal communication, small group dynamics, and public speaking. Students will investigate topics of interest and present them in class. The goal of the class is to improve the students� personal communication skills and to make public speaking a fun and non-threatening idea. This course will be especially helpful for those aspiring to leadership positions or careers in ministry, teaching, or business. No honors option is available for elective courses. Methods of evaluation: regular attendance and active participation in class, completion of homework, tests, speeches and projects. | Field Trips and Travel: Navarre Beach, Florida - to witness the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Dennis. Pensacola Christian College Nursing Camp - a one-week residential camp. North Inlet -Winyah Bay Reserve (part of the USC Baruch Marine Field Laboratory). An all day event on Friday, Sept.16th. We will be participating in gathering data for a study they are doing. After we tour the lab and they discuss the data collecting process, we will go out to the bay and collect water, soil, and animal specimens. We will bring them back to the lab and record our findings Renaissance Festival in Charlotte, NC. |
