VESSELS TRANSFERRED TO BRITAIN IN "DESTROYER DEAL" SEPTEMBER 1940 |
In September 1940, even as the US Navy was struggling to rebuild its destroyer forces (see relevant pages on this site) 50 WWI-era ships were transferred to the Royal Navy, itself hard-pressed in the Battle of the Atlantic. In exchange, the US received the right to establish abses on British possessions in the Western Hermisphere, including NewFoundland, Bermuda, Trinidad, etc. Listed below are the vessels transferred and their new British (or Canadian) names and pennant numbers. Nine of these ships were later transferred by Britain to the USSR, and are idicated by an asterisk. (*) Vessels lost while in foreign service are indicated with the "pound" (#) sign. |
