With only 16 active flag officers the Navy of 1896 relied on its captains to fill many senior positions ashore as well as command its most powerful vessels afloat. The following is a list of the US Navy's 45 active duty line captains in January 1896. The list includes future Admirals such as George Dewey, Winfield Schley, and William Sampson, naval theorist Alfred Mahan, and many lesser known officers. It does not include staff officers with the relative rank of Captain or retired officers. The list is in order of seniority. Officers marked with an asterick (*) held the relative rank of Commodore by virtue of their duty station. |
