| Until the Civil War, Captain was the highest substantive rank in the US Navy. While the war finally led Congress to authorize the ranks of Commodore and Rear Admiral (as well as Vice-Admiral and Admiral on a "special" basis) the Navy still relied heavily on its Captain. The following is a list of the 35 Active Duty Line Captain on service January 1, 1866 and their assignments It does not include staff officers with the relative rank of Captain or retired officers. The list is in order of seniority. |
