Sackawanna County, NC is a total figment of my imagination. The area is home to the Slim Mountain & Southern Railroad , along with several other lesser companies . This map was created mostly to practice using the map editor and to see what the Sackawanna Valley region would look like. I'm very happy with the results.
As the replacement for the company's founder, your job is to turn a foundering railroad around and make it profitable again. All of the company's track has been built already, and there are a number of connecting lines. You can build connected track, but finding somewhere to put it is going to be difficult because of the mountainous terrain. Your main tools are going to be trains -- lots of them.

This map was my second effort. There's a great deal more time in it than the SM&S map, even though I started with one of the standard maps that come with the game. I started playing the "Southern USA" map and was disgusted by the lack of cities and unrealistic economy. So, I started mucking around in the editor to fix that. I've added a LOT of cities. I've also tweaked the economy so that it more closely resembles the real Southern economy.

This is my most elaborate map yet. There's a doc file included which gives you some background on how you've gotten to the alien planet Deneb, and what you've got to do there. This map actually started out as an idea for a sci-fi novel. Unfortunately, I'm much better at creating alien worlds and races than letting characters run around in them! Therefore I leave the running around to RT2 players -- at least for now.

A truly generic land. This map has no goal, I drew it just to have some fun. Frankly, most of the time I tend to cheat when I play this map! There's a dense urban area made up of a number of cities, two mountain ranges, and a wide, flat plain devoid of cities but full of farms.

After playing the Deneb map for a while, I got a trifle bored with it. The continent of Denebalia contributed nothing to the scenario and gobbled up almost half of the map space. Also, I'd never managed to get the territories to work properly, and the periodic riots tended to be more of an annoyance than a challenge. So, I decided to start over from scratch instead of continuing work on the original map.

A couple TV documentaries on Atlantis got me thinking (which is always dangerous). Taking the description of a continent with a rectangular plain surrounded by mountains on three sides, and a circular main city, I drew a RT2 map. Your goal is to aid the recolinization of Atlantis by building an efficient, profitable transportation system. You have fifty years. If you are successful, the economy of the continent will boom. If you fail, Atlantis will sink back under the waves. Warning -- the starting economy level is set VERY low, which makes this map extremely difficult.

The Indian Valley Railroad recently gained some fame in the Thomas the Tank Engine movie. However, the name has been around for a very long time. To quote Lucius Beebe in the glossary of his book High Iron, the Indian Valley is "a mythical road where there are always good jobs waiting; the happy haven of railway legend."
My Indian Valley map might not completely live up to that. The map features a box canyon to the west, with a wide, flat valley in the middle split by a river system. To the east, the river opens up and becomes navigable, with a large port town at the head of navigation. Towns are few and far between, named for famous railroaders or railroad slang terms. Cargoes are plentiful. All three medals are possible after fifty years, but I didn't bother including a lose -- why rub it in? The economy is directly affected by the success or lack thereof of all railroad companies.

The Pennsylvania Railroad built an extensive network of lines on the Delmarva Peninsula between the Chesapeake and Delaware bays. The system was fed by a single trunk line running down the length of the peninsula. Today, Norfolk Southern operates the trunk line while several of the branches are operated by a shortline called the Maryland & Delaware. Build up your own, independent Delmarva railroad system on this map.
This map has gentle hills and lots of towns. I have to admit, I like maps that have towns relatively close together. Having lots of towns close together makes it easier for startup companies to make money. This map is heavy on agricultural products because that's basically what the major industry is on the Delmarva Peninsula. Because there is a lot of tourism due to the close proximity of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, I've made passenger traffic pretty high. I like fast economy growth, so that's maxed out.

Toyland! If there's anywhere where life is perfect, this must be it!
Humph.
Toyland is under seige. Nitpickers are invading from the north, Rivet Counters are invading from the east, and Scale Snobs are invading from the south. These, uh, persons are wreacking havoc with the railroads. It'll be your job to build up a profitable rail network.
This map actually started out being called 'Tinplate II" and is, in
fact,
a complete redo of the older Tinplate map. After finishing the map and
play
testing it extensively, I decided to change the name to Toyland since
that's
much more descriptive. The economy is more complex, there are more
events,
and for the first time in any of my maps I've included a meaningful win
or
lose.

Unreleased
Like a lot of other folks, the release of the new Lord of the Rings movie trilogy got me interested in Tolkien. I bought the big, combined edition of all three books and plowed through it. In the back are a series of maps... hmm...
Somehow, I don't think Tolkien ever envisioned hobbits and elves --
or
even dwarves -- running trains. However, the maps are there and I like
creating
RT2 maps, so the result is kind of inevitable.
