| Interview with Evanescence and VH1 VH1: Did you initally want to be seen as a faith band? What changed? Lee: Certainly didn't. Other members of the band did. We've always had our own beliefs. I don't think two people in the band think the same thing. In the past, other members of the band, who I won't name, stepped out of their bounds of representing the band talking about their personal beliefs and it got thrown into the bands beliefs. That's not what this band is about. I dont' want to alienate anyone. If you get a Christian message out of our music, cool, that works for you. We're just trying to write about our lives. VH1: Some of your songs certainly beg the question - "tourniquet," which has lyrics about salvation and God, but it also seems like it could be about drugs. Is it vague on purpose? Lee: A lot of our songs are written in a way that you could take them to mean several things. That one was written by our drummer Rocky [Gray], who was in a Christian death metal band before he joined us. He told me that it is coming from a Christian standpoint, but it's about suicide. It's from the perceptive of someone who has just commited suicide and it's about the controversay in Christianity that if you commit suicide, will you goto heaven or hell? If all sins are forgiven after accepting Christ, why would there be an exception? |
