ext. pumpkin stand - day The pumpkin stand has about ten long rows of card tables full of pumpkins. A lot have been bought but there are still quite a few left. Tommy, Danny and Stephen are walking down an isle, looking at the pumpkins. They get to the end of the isle close to the register when Tommy stops. TOMMY How bout this one? Tommy picks up a huge pumpkin to show the boys. Danny and Stephen smile widely. DANNY That’s perfect! STEPHEN Yeah! TOMMY OK. Let’s go buy it. They walk up to the register. The CASHIER is a middle aged woman. CASHIER Did you find the right one? Tommy puts the pumpkin down on the table and digs for his wallet. TOMMY Oh yeah! The cashier smiles. CASHIER Good! Stephen turns around to look at the pumpkins. stephen’s pov Standing at the other end of the isles is the Shape, watching them. back to scene Stephen grins and turns to Tommy, tugging at his sleeve. Tommy starts to turn. TOMMY What Stephen? Stephen turns back to the isles. STEPHEN Tommy, look at... tommy and stephen’s pov The Shape is gone. back to scene Stephen looks disappointed. STEPHEN Oh, nothing. It’s gone. TOMMY Oh well, I’m sure it wasn’t important. Tommy turns back to the cashier. ext. haddonfield street - day Tommy, Danny and Stephen are walking down a sidewalk back home. Tommy is carrying the pumpkin in his arms. TOMMY Kara is gonna love this one! DANNY You think she really will Tommy? She really didn’t want one this year. TOMMY Don’t worry about it buddy. I think this might get her into the spirit again. I hope. Stephen looks a little confused. STEPHEN Tommy, why doesn’t Kara like Halloween? Tommy and Danny stop causing Stephen to stop too. Tommy glances at Danny a little worried. TOMMY We’ll tell you when you’re older Stephen. I think you’re a little too young to understand. STEPHEN Well, OK. If you promise to tell me when I am older. Tommy smiles. TOMMY No problem kiddo. Tommy messes up Stephens hair and he laughs. They continue on down the sidewalk. A blue sedan passes them going the other way in the street. ext. different street - day The blue sedan comes around the corner and proceeds down the street. The sedan stops at the curb about half way down the street. The driver’s and passenger’s side doors open and out step RICHARD and DARLINE CARUTHERS. It’s only been 12 years since the last time we’ve seen them, but they look much older. They both look like they’ve been crying. DARLINE It’s always so hard to visit them. RICHARD I know honey. Darline comes around to Richard and starts sobbing into his arm. Richard puts his arms around her and tries to comfort her. DARLINE Why did they have to be taken away from us? Why Richard, why!? RICHARD I don’t know, I just don’t know. Richard starts to cry too. DARLINE It almost seems like we lost Jamie twice. RICHARD I wish that son-of-a-bitch were still alive and right here right now! I’m so mad I could kill him myself! Richard starts to lead Darline, who is sobbing uncontrollably now, into the house. RICHARD (cont’d) Come on dear, let’s go inside. Richard takes out his keys and unlocks the door, leads Darline into the house and closes the door behind him. over shape’s shoulder - day The Shape emerges from behind a bush further down the street. A steady breathing is heard as he watches the house for a second, then he begins to walk toward it. int. tommy and kara’s house - day Tommy comes in through the door followed by Danny and Stephen. TOMMY Kara, we’re home! Tommy puts the pumpkin on the counter and starts to take off his jacket. Danny and Stephen are taking off theirs too. Kara walks into the kitchen. She looks at the pumpkin. TOMMY Well, what do you think? KARA It’s huge! Tommy smiles. TOMMY Do you like it? KARA Yeah! It’ll definitely be the biggest jack-o’-lantern I’ve ever had. Tommy turns to Danny. TOMMY Get me the big spoon out of the drawer. DANNY OK. Danny turns, runs to the drawer and opens it up. Kara smiles. int. haddonfield police station - day The interior of the station has been remodeled for a more modern look. The sheriff’s desk is still raised higher then the other desks but the computer terminal is now set up in the main area of the station, not over by the cell block area. There is a lot of activity in the station at the moment. Officers are running back and forth or working at their desks. We see officer Harris at the sheriff’s desk and realize he is Haddonfield’s new sheriff. OFFICER DAVISON, a young man in his 20’s with short blond hair looks up from his desk. OFFICER DAVISON Is that mask law still in effect this year sheriff? SHERIFF HARRIS Of course it is Davison. That Myers’ mask is banned in this town. Anyone caught wearing that damn thing spends the night in jail. OFFICER DAVISON Just making sure sheriff. SHERIFF HARRIS Hey Peck! OFFICER PECK, in his early thirties with black hair, looks over at the sheriff. OFFICER PECK Yeah sheriff? SHERIFF HARRIS Ya gonna visit the Caruthers’ like you always do this day? OFFICER PECK Yeah, I’ll be leaving shortly. SHERIFF HARRIS Say hi to them for me, will ya? OFFICER PECK No problem sheriff. int. caruthers’ house - living room - day Darline sits on the couch wrapped in a blanket, rubbing her eyes and sniffling, some wadded up Kleenex on the table in front of her. Richard comes into the room holding a mug of hot tea. RICHARD Here, drink this. Richard hands Darline the mug and she takes a sip from it. RICHARD (cont’d) You drink that and I’ll go run you a bath, OK? Darline smiles and nods up to him. Richard turns around and heads up stairs. int. caruthers’ kitchen - shape’s pov - day The Shape stands silently in the kitchen. POV focuses on the counter and sees a steak knife. A burned, scared hand comes into view and takes the knife from the counter. POV moves forward and peers around the corner to see Darline sitting on the couch drinking her tea. back to scene Darline sets the tea down on the table just as the Shape advances on her. int. caruthers’ house - bathroom - day Richard turns off the tap on the bathtub and feels the water with his hand. He smiles and walks out of the bathroom. int. caruthers’ house - living room - day Darline is slumped on the couch, the blanket pulled over her stomach. Richard comes down the stairs and looks at Darline. RICHARD Honey, wake up. Your bath is ready. Richard walks over to Darline and shakes her shoulder gently. RICHARD (cont’d) Come on honey, your water will get cold. The blanket falls off of Darline to reveal a deep, bloody gash in her stomach. Richard jumps back and gasps, horror stricken. A hand falls on Richard’s shoulder. Richard spins around and comes face to face with the Shape. The Shape tightens his grip on Richard’s shoulder and Richard lets out a cry of pain as a bone SNAPS. RICHARD You son of a bitch. I’ll kill you for what you did to my family. Richard tries to punch at the Shape but the Shape blocks the blow and rams the steak knife into Richard’s eye. Richard falls to the floor dead. The Shape stands over Richard’s body and cocks his head, then walks off. ext. caruthers’ house - day A squad car pulls up behind the Caruthers’ car. The engine cuts out and out steps officer Peck. Peck walks up the sidewalk and knocks on the door. OFFICER PECK Richard, Darline! Are you home. shAPE’S POV POV peers around the corner of the house, watching officer Peck. bACK TO SCENE Peck looks down to the street. officer peck’s pov We see the Caruther’s car in the street. As POV returns to the door, we notice that there is no one at the corner of the house. bACK TO SCENE Peck tries the door knob but the door is locked. Peck walks a little ways down the sidewalk and looks up at the second story of the house. officer peck’s pov The house looks empty, no signs of movement from inside. bACK TO SCENE Peck turns and starts to walk along the side of the house. officer peck’s pov POV turns the corner of the house, no one is there. We move along the side of the house and come to the back, there is still no one there. bACK TO SCENE Peck walks up to the back door and tries the door knob, it is also locked. Peck knocks on the door hard. OFFICER PECK Richard! Darline! Are you in there!? int. tOMMY AND KARA’S HOUSE - kitchen - DAY Tommy places the top back on the pumpkin. A scary/funny face carved into the side. STEPHEN That looks really good Tommy! Stephen is standing right next to Tommy, smiling up at him. DANNY It’s not bad. Could have been scarier though. Danny is on the opposite side of Tommy. TOMMY Now now Danny, we don’t want to scare your mom too much. DANNY Yeah, I suppose. TOMMY Well, I think it looks pretty good. Hey Kara, come here! Kara walks into the kitchen. Tommy steps to the side to show Kara the jack-o’-lantern. KARA That looks pretty good. I like it. Kara smiles. There is a KNOCK at the door. Stephen and Danny both jump excitedly. STEPHEN Mellisa’s here! Danny runs to the door and opens it. Standing in the door way is MELLISA JACOBS, a very pretty 20 year old with long brown hair. She smiles down at Danny. MELLISA Hey there kiddo. DANNY Hi Mellisa. TOMMY You’re here a little early. Mellisa looks up at Tommy. MELLISA Yeah, I know. I came over to get Kara. Kara looks a little confused. KARA What for? MELLISA I need a little help getting my house ready, and I wanted to show you were everything will be tonight. Kara smiles. KARA Oh, OK. Kara grabs her jacket off the back of one of the chairs and puts it on. Mellisa walks over to the door then turns toward the kids. MELLISA I’ll be back shortly. Kara walks over to Mellisa and the two walk out the door. Tommy claps his hands together. TOMMY Right. Let’s get this jack-o-lantern outside. int. officer peck’s squad - day Peck is talking on his police radio’s mic. He looks very nervous and a little shaky. OFFICER PECK No sheriff, both doors are locked and I can’t see any sings that they’re home. SHERIFF HARRIS (V.O.) And you say their car is still parked in the street? OFFICER PECK Yeah. I’m really worried about them sheriff. int. hADDONFIELD POLICE STATION - DAY Sheriff Harris is sitting at his desk with his radio mic in his hand. He taps it on his chin as he tries to think, then brings it to his mouth. SHERIFF HARRIS Peck, weren’t they invited to some kinda party out in Russleville somewhere? OFFICER PECK (V.O.) You’re right! I completely forgot about that. It was some kind of all day Halloween thing. They never told me they weren’t going so they must have gone. SHERIFF HARRIS And they really don’t like driving long distances. int. officer peck’s squad - day Officer Peck looks a lot calmer than he had before. OFFICER PECK Especially today. Someone must have given them a ride to the party. SHERIFF HARRIS (V.O.) I would assume so. Why don’t you come on back Peck. OFFICER PECK Yeah, OK sheriff. I’ll be there shortly. Peck hangs the mic back onto the radio and starts his squad. ext. officer peck’s squad - day The squad car pulls away from the curb and drives off down the street. int. hADDONFIELD POLICE STATION - DAY Sheriff Harris Hangs up his mic as well and sits at his desk in thought. OFFICER MONAHAN, a pretty woman in her 30’s with long red hair tied back in a ponytail, walks up to Harris. OFFICER MONAHAN Hey, is everything alright? SHERIFF HARRIS I don’t know. OFFICER MONAHAN I thought you told Peck that the Caruthers’ where most likely at that party. SHERIFF HARRIS I did, but they can’t be. Monahan looks confused. OFFICER MONAHAN Why not? SHERIFF HARRIS Because that party was canceled. Monahan looks even more confused. SHERIFF HARRIS (cont’d) I was invited to that party too. I received the cancelation notice a few days ago. OFFICER MONAHAN So where are the Caruthers’? SHERIFF HARRIS I don’t know, but I hope to God their okay. Now Monahan looks worried. Harris looks up at her then smiles. SHERIFF HARRIS (cont’d) I’m sure their fine. But just to be safe, I want you to tell all officers to watch out for anything suspicious tonight, especially anyone wearing that damn mask! This town has been quiet for six years, I want it to stay that way. OFFICER MONAHAN Right sheriff. Monahan turns to leave. SHERIFF HARRIS And Monahan. Monahan turns back to Harris. SHERIFF HARRIS (cont’d) Don’t tell Peck about this, okay? Monahan nods then turns and leaves. int. tOMMY AND KARA’S HOUSE - kitchen - DAY Kara and Mellisa enter the house. They hang their jackets onto the back of one of the chairs. KARA We’re back! They stand in the kitchen for a minute. MELLISA Where are they? KARA Probably upstairs getting ready. int. tOMMY AND KARA’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY Kara and Mellisa walk into the living room and walk up to the stair case leading to the second floor. KARA Tommy?! There is no response. KARA (cont’d) You’d better not be playing around! Still no answer. Kara starts to walk upstairs. Mellisa follows her. int. tOMMY AND KARA’S HOUSE - upstairs hallway - DAY Kara and Mellisa reach the top of the stairs and walk toward the bathroom door. KARA Tommy? They continue toward the door. kARA’S POV POV moves a little closer to the door. Danny, dressed up in a skeleton costume jumps out from the doorway, growling. bACK TO SCENE Kara and Mellisa jump. Mellisa starts to laugh but Kara isn’t amused. KARA Damn it Danny! Don’t do that! MELLISA Now Kara, don’t get angry at him. Kara takes a breath. KARA Sorry Mellisa, but he knows better. Danny gets an innocent look on his face. Tommy sticks his head out of the bathroom doorway and grins. TOMMY Sorry Kara, but he’s just so hard to control when you’re not around. Danny smiles. DANNY Yeah mom, Tommy’s is a lot easy to manipulate than you. TOMMY Why you! Tommy runs from the bathroom and chases after Danny down the stairs. TOMMY (cont’d) Come back here, you corpse. Kara grins as Mellisa starts laughing again. MELLISA You must have a blast with those two around. KARA Oh yeah, never a dull moment. Stephen comes out of the bathroom dressed up like a pirate. STEPHEN How do I look Kara? Kara and Mellisa smile at Stephen. KARA You look perfect honey. MELLISA Oh, he’s so adorable. A loud THUMP is heard from downstairs. Kara looks over her shoulder then takes Stephen’s hand. KARA Come on Stephen, we’d better make sure those two haven’t broken anything. ext. hADDONFIELD STREETS - NIGHT Leaves blow across the streets and yards as the tree branches sway in the cool night breeze. Almost every house is decorated for Halloween. Jack-o’- lanterns look out from every doorstep and porch. The first few trick-or-treaters are walking up and down the sidewalks. ext. tOMMY AND KARA’S HOUSE - night There are cardboard decorations in the windows. Candles illuminate the inside of the house and the Jack-o’-lantern sits on the front steps. A group of three KIDS and a GROWN UP walk up the steps and ring the doorbell. The door opens and Tommy steps out with a big bowl of candy. KIDS Trick-or-treat! Tommy smiles at the kids. TOMMY You kids look great! Tommy hands each of the kids two pieces of candy to a chorus of thank yous. TOMMY You’re welcome. The kids walk down the sidewalk and head to the next house. Tommy closes the door. int. tOMMY AND KARA’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - night Tommy sets the bowl of candy down on the table. Danny, Stephen and Mellisa walk into the living room. TOMMY You guys ready? Danny and Stephen nod enthusiastically. Kara comes into the living room with her jacket on. MELLISA You sure you don’t mind doing this Kara? KARA Oh no. It’s no trouble at all. What about you? MELLISA What? Oh no, I love these two to death. I think it’ll be fun! My parents should be home in an hour or so. KARA Okay. Kara bends down and gives Danny and Stephen hugs. KARA You two be good for Mellisa. DANNY AND STEPHEN Okay. TOMMY Will you be coming right back after they get home? KARA I’ll probably go for a short walk Tommy nods. MELLISA Let’s go you guys. Mellisa, Danny and Stephen all walk out the door followed by Kara. TOMMY Have fun kids! ext. tOMMY AND KARA’S HOUSE - night Mellisa, Danny and Stephen all walk down the sidewalk to the left. Kara turns right. She walks to the next house down the block. She walks up the side walk and into the house. The front porch light turns on. ext. hADDONFIELD - NIGHT The Shape steps out from behind a bush across the street and stares at the house for a moment. sHAPE’S POV POV moves to the right to watch Mellisa, Danny and Stephen. bACK TO SCENE The Shape steps behind the bush out of sight.
