Exclusive: Mel Ramos hates Blur!

So basically Laura is doing a dissertation about controversial record covers, and she couldn't remember the name of the picture used for the cover of Blur's "She's So High" (pictured below). So she managed to find the website of the bloke who did it, and on there was his email address. He's on AOL like Laura, so she decided to send him an instant message...

Youneverwillbe:  Hello, are you the pop artist Mel Ramo?
Meljramos:  In person
Youneverwillbe:  oh wow! (You ass licker - C)
Youneverwillbe:  I wanted to ask you a couple of questions about your work if that's ok?
Meljramos:  Please make it brief (Rude bugger!)
Youneverwillbe:  OK.. whats the name of the picture where a girl is atop a hippo?
Meljramos:  "Hippopotamus" (hehe - L)
Youneverwillbe:  Oh right.. and is it supposed to be ironic?
Meljramos:  If you have ask, it probably isn't. (So if it's not ironic, he's just a dirty pervert?! - C)
Youneverwillbe:  Were you pleased when it was made into a record cover, for Blur's She's So High single?
Meljramos:  It is always nice to your work on record covers.
Youneverwillbe:  Do you deliberately choose to paint controversial subject matters?
Meljramos:  I deliberately paint what I paint but without the intent to make them controversial.  
Youneverwillbe:  but is the controversy a bonus, as it adds exposure to your work?
Meljramos:  It is not always a bonus because it scares off timid collectors. By the way, who am I having this chat with?
Youneverwillbe:  Sorry, I'm Laura Millward, in England. I'm doing a project for college about controversial record covers.
Youneverwillbe:  Did you know that when Blur released that single with your cover art, it caused a bit of a storm, and outraged some feminists in this country
Meljramos:  I figured from the tone of your questions that you were a woman. (the cheeky get! - L)  Militant feminists hate  my work however some of my biggest fans are women. (haha Laura's a militant feminist! - C)
Youneverwillbe:  Right..
Youneverwillbe:  I'm not trying to be accusing, I'm just trying to understand your work a bit more
Youneverwillbe:  By the way, are you a fan of Blur's music?
Meljramos:  The common misconception of feminist critics is they believe I hate women which has always puzzled me because quite the opposite is true.
Youneverwillbe:  Well I can tell you don't hate women, or else why would you devote so much of your work to painting them
Meljramos:  I did not like the music on "She's so high"
Youneverwillbe:  I think the feminist view is probably that your view of women, which comes through in your work is that you use them as objects in your paintings I suppose
Meljramos:  It is difficult to make a painting of anything without objectifying it.  
Youneverwillbe:  Yes but the women in your paintings don't seem to be doing much do they. They're merely there to be admired for their beauty.. like an object..
Youneverwillbe:  Seems like your art is mainly trying to appeal to men.
Meljramos:  It never occurs to me to appeal to anyone in my work. I approach each painting as an esthetic problem to be solved.   
Youneverwillbe:  Ah okay.
Youneverwillbe:  Do you have any artists who've particularly inspired your work?
Meljramos:  I am a big fan of Velasquez.  It is early morning here on the West Coast and I usually start the day by checking my e-mail, which is why you happened to have caught me at the computer. But now I have to go to work. Have a nice day and good luck with your project.
